Talkie Tuesday: WCTH Home for Christmas

"Home is truly where the heart is."

Hello everyone!

And so with my final Christmas-themed movie review, we say farewell not only to December, but to 2019.

Hopefully the year has treated you well, and you've made all the plans you need for 2020. Fingers crossed they all work out for you!

In the meantime, it's time to make a Christmas pit-stop one last time with our movies.

Come January it's back to Hogwarts (or not Hogwarts, as may be the case with the final stages of Mr. Potter's journey), so let's try and soak up all that's left of this Christmas spirit, shall we? After all, it'll be a full year before we can get into it again.

What better way to say goodbye than with When Calls the Heart?

The show that captured hearts around the globe with its message and persevering spirit, and which keeps going despite every obstacle and hurdle thrown its way.

Because even and especially in When Calls the heart, it's time to come Home for Christmas.

Synopsis Saturday: The Mandalorian

"This is the Way."

Hello everyone!

Switching it up a little this Saturday, because really, how could I not?

I may be doing this a few upcoming Saturdays as well because there's been some really great things on television that I couldn't fit into my Talkie Tuesdays, but I just might be able to find them a place on Saturdays!

I am, of course, talking (among other things) about His Dark Materials, the first season of which concluded just before Christmas.

I'm undecided if I should do an episode by episode recap of those, or just a general Saturday one, so I'll figure it out eventually.

First, however, it's time to travel to a galaxy far, far away.

The Mandalorian raced out the gate as strong as it could possibly be, gained momentum around all the tight corners, and finished off with an explosive bang.

Tome Thursday: His Christmas Present

Hello everyone!

Merry Christmas and Happy Boxing Day if you celebrate it!

I hope you've had some fantastic days with family, friends and loved ones, and that the time spent together was full of joy and happy moments.

In the end, that's what it's all about, isn't it?

A lot of the times we convince ourselves it's about the presents we gift one another, and in recent years this capitalistic approach has certainly almost overpowered the simple message of just BEING, especially if you don't get to see the people closest to you that often.

Me, I've had way too much good food and even better laughs, and I'm still rolling around from both.

So to get back in shape just a little bit, here's my book blog post for this week, of course with another Christmas story since December isn't nearly over yet, and obviously it's going to be another Serenity Woods one.

When in doubt, turn to your favourite authors.

Talkie Tuesday: A Homecoming for the Holidays

"If an opportunity presents itself and it's the one you want, you go towards, not away."

Hello everyone!

Merry Christmas!

I'm not taking a break this year because I feel like I'm in a pretty good rhythm at the moment, plus it really doesn't take all THAT long to write up a blog post like this, at least I don't think so. I tend to have them typed a little in advance and I just edit the whole thing later on, anyway.

With the Christmas season basically in FULL swing now, there's really nothing stopping us from putting up more Christmas-based reviews!

I'll admit though, that I'm starting to feel the burn out; I want to watch and read different things and themes after indulging in Christmas for a solid month.

I like to keep going throughout December, however, because it's pretty fun, not to mention there really isn't any other time you can safely indulge in movies like this. That weird June/July thing Hallmark does definitely doesn't count.

So enough dawdling, alright? Let's take a look at A Homecoming for the Holidays.

Tome Thursday: My Christmas Billionaire

Hello everyone!

Time really does fly when you're having fun. It seems like only yesterday that I started reading The Billionaire Kings by Serenity Woods, and yet somehow, we've reached the end.

Of course it may not REALLY be the end, as Ms Woods has indicated there might be a follow-up story, kind of like a wrap-up, to catch up with everyone in the King dynasty.

And it really IS a dynasty by this point, given how many of them there are and how they seem interconnected all over the place.

In the meantime though, we need to review the last of the actual books and love stories, because there's only two people left who remain single after all the others have found their happily ever afters.

What makes this particular book special is the fact that it takes place in Rovaniemi, Finland, which is an actual place up in the Arctic Circle. It's one of my bucket list destinations, because who DOESN'T want to go spy on Santa in his own village??

Ahem.

My Christmas Billionaire does just that.

Talkie Tuesday: Christmas at the Plaza

"Nothing unimportant ever happens at the Plaza."

Hello everyone!

Here we are with our third Christmas movie review since December started, where did the time go? I honestly feel as if it's zipping along like we're in some sort of race to the finish line. I'm probably going to blink and it's going to go from 2019 to 2020.

Meanwhile, you gotta do what you gotta do, right?

So here we go with another Hallmark Christmas movie because, well, why not?

They've certainly done much better this year than in several years past, although granted I also haven't watched every single movie they've churned out. There's bound to be weak links in the chain because of the quantity of them.

But the ones I HAVE watched, so far at least, have generally been very enjoyable. Sure there might have been one or two that could have done a bit better, but all that aside, as a general rule, this has been a pretty good Christmas countdown so far.

And since I'm all about the good vibes, why don't we head on to probably the most well-known holiday location in New York? Christmas at the Plaza is up next.

Tome Thursday: If Kisses Were Snowflakes

Hello everyone!

Today has been a rather busy day for me, but that said, I've been looking forward to sitting down and typing up this blog post, because it features one of my favourite books.

I think you may be sensing a trend here.

I don't believe I've ever run into more than one or two books written by Serenity Woods that I didn't like - and even then, it wasn't that I really didn't like them, I just didn't connect well enough with a character so I felt out of whack with the entire thing, and therefore missed the experience.

But ALL of her books are guaranteed to make you smile. Scout's honour!

I've been on a Woods reading binge ever since December began, going through her Three Wise Men series (I still have to read Matt's book one more time) and generally just picking up her Christmas-y titles.

This one is DEFINITELY one of those, because believe it or not, it's part of her Christmas Wishes book series, a set of standalone books that are all set in Christmas time.

As they say, If Kisses Were Snowflakes - I'd send you a snowstorm.

Talkie Tuesday: ACP The Royal Baby

"Next year will be even busier ..."

Hello everyone!

So we interrupt your regularly scheduled Hallmark Countdown to Christmas with a movie nobody actually expected but people were honestly pretty happy about.

Or, at least, they were sort of happy, I suppose?

Netflix is the streaming service that a lot of people consider as a saviour because they've often picked up series after they've been cancelled by other networks, or made movies that were really savory to watch.

They've also started punching out Christmas movies in the past couple of years.

This means that, yesterday, after I was finished with part one of Crisis on Infinite Earths (OMG!), I needed something to both cheer me up and to make me think about other things.

Naturally, I went to grab a Christmas movie, and I chose Netflix instead of Hallmark. I may be missing the bridging part of the trilogy, but A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby could easily be watched as a stand-alone, too!

Tome Thursday: Holly's First Noel

Hello everyone!

Of course books won't be escaping the Christmas touch, either.

There's always a bunch of them that are offered for free at Kobo, which I'm honestly stoked about, and then there are also others that you can buy that won't empty your pockets and bankrupt you completely.

Tonight's choice was one of the latter.

Obviously, if you know me, you'll know there's no way in any universe that I won't be reviewing a Serenity Woods book when it comes to Christmas. There are far, FAR too many good ones to go around!

In about two weeks her newest one hits publishers, but until then we'll be taking a look at one of her earlier ones filled with Christmas spirit.

Because there are BOUND to be people who can relate to the storyline in Holly's First Noel. There's no way it's an anomaly.

Talkie Tuesday: Picture a Perfect Christmas

"Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse ...
"

Hello everyone!

Welcome back to the blog, and welcome to this year's Christmas extravaganza!

I know, I know, Christmas is still weeks away, but on this blog it arrives early, aka it's hitting the ground running tonight with the first seasonal blog post that I'm starting right now.

As you probably all know I have this thing for Hallmark where I'll watch quite a few of their movies if I can get my hands on them - and since figuring out that there are good Samaritans out there who put up an actual list on Wikipedia, well, that just makes my life SO much easier!

That being said, I know not everyone enjoys these, and I do occasionally hit a snag myself when I'm expecting too much from one movie or the other.

Not this time, though.

No, for the start of my Christmas blogging this year, I picked a good one. Can you picture it snowing? I bet some of you in the US can. While you're at it, Picture a Perfect Christmas, too.

Tome Thursday: Desert Oath

Hello everyone!

For my last "regular" sort of book review before we dive right into all the Christmas stuff next week, I chose another game-related title.

As you may or may not remember, I became a big fan of Assassin's Creed when I accidentally stumbled over a gameplay on Youtube. Since then, I've gotten to about three quarters of both Odyssey and Origins, and need to just buckle down to finish the lot.

Shouldn't be too difficult.

In the meantime, however, I was delighted to find that the original Assassin's Creed novel content creator, Oliver Bowden, had written a prequel for his series.

Now I've had the rest of the books on a back burner for a bit, and haven't gotten around to reading them yet, so I may do it now with the holidays looming up ahead. However, this one can be read as a standalone, and you don't need to know what goes on in the other books to understand it.

We do run into fan favourites and characters from the game, though.

Don't fall down into a sand dune, it's time for Assassin's Creed Origins: Desert Oath.

Tuesday 26 November 2019

Talkie Tuesday: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

"Why is it, when something happens, it is ALWAYS you three?"

Hello everyone!

With December just around the corner (literally!) I figured it was time to do the last sort of regular movie review before I dive off the deep end and start on my Christmas movies.

Yes, like I've done for the past two years or so, I'll be devoting December reviews entirely to the Christmas theme, so after tonight, the final two movie reviews of the saga will have to wait until after New Year's and for us to return in January.

I know, I know, I had that break in October as well, why couldn't I have planned this better?

I should have. But my math failed me and I didn't really calculate how many weeks there are left in the year, so there you have it.

I plan on getting the entire movie saga on here though, so don't worry.

It may just take a little bit more time.

But, as a last huzzah before being merry and bright, let's take a look at Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Thursday 21 November 2019

Tome Thursday: My Wicked Billionaire

Hello everyone!

It's time to go back down under again!

Not exactly Australia of course, since I can't even remember the last time I read a book that happens in Australia (not counting last week's blog post topic).

No, I'm talking about the smaller of the countries down under.

It's time to return to New Zealand.

And of course, what better way to do it than with another Billionaire King?

I have to admit that this is the kind of series I truly enjoy on a whole lot of levels, because it has it all: family, friendships, romance, realism, and on top of everything else it's centered around an animal shelter, which means a lot of cute animals come through the story too!

The stories are slowly being wrapped up into a neat little present to put under our Christmas trees, so let's hop right to it, shall we?

Tuesday 19 November 2019

Talkie Tuesday: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

"There's a storm coming, Harry."

Hello everyone!

You didn't think we were actually done with magic, did you?

Things are only just heating up!

This week is all about teen angst, magical spiritual connections, and a whole lot of dainty coughing when all you want to do is strangle the person who's actually doing the coughing.

You have to love it when an author comes up with a character that you hate even more than the antagonist. There's a certain kind of magic in THAT, for sure.

Last week, we were dealing with some early adolescence, but this week that's a full-blown thing, and you can't escape it, no matter how much you may want to.

And of course, there's still a heck of a lot of a lot of magic going on.

Voldemort is back, people. And so is the Order of the Phoenix.

Tome Thursday: Flash Rip

Hello everyone!

When in doubt, always turn to an author you KNOW writes well.

I have a number of contemporary romance authors I turn to when I need something to pass the time with, or just a pick-me-up after having a bad day.

One of them is Keira Andrews.

I stumbled across her work completely at random, and I didn't even really start reading right away, but once I did, you can bet that I was hunting down any and all available books by this particular author.

I think I've reviewed a bunch of them here on the blog already.

In any event, she just published her newest romance, and wouldn't you know it but it coincided rather perfectly with me wrapping up Booktober and starting regular reviews again?

Grab your surfboards, everyone, because it's time for Flash Rip.

Talkie Tuesday: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

"Everything's going to change now, isn't it?"

Hello everyone!

It’s time to return to Hogwarts yet again, and honestly, time flies, doesn’t it? Fourth year means that the students are pretty much halfway through their schooling and will soon have to consider what they want to do in life, and where they want to go.

Before that happens, however, there are some other things that need to be addressed.

After all, it wouldn’t be Harry Potter if things didn’t go wrong, right? Right.

It’s a pretty much given thing that if your name is Harry there’s a fairly good chance you’ll end up in trouble somewhere, somehow, and you’ll have to get yourself (and your friends) out of it. Like Hermione asks in the movie itself, will they EVER get a quiet year at Hogwarts?

Probably not. Let's be real.

And since this IS fourth year, let’s jump right to it, shall we?

The Goblet of Fire awaits our name.

Tome Thursday: My Wounded Billionaire

Hello everyone!

I'm BACK!

Book reviews are a thing again on this blog, though I do hope, as I hoped on Tuesday, that you've enjoyed my Booktober activity which I did last month. That does mean, however, that I'm a little bit behind on my reviews.

And by 'a little behind' I mean 'a lot behind', because I've already got a new ARC waiting for me to read it from this series, yet I haven't managed to get a proper review up for the fifth book!

Shame on me. Shame, shame, shame.

Anyway.

Considering that Serenity Woods is probably my favourite contemporary romance author (at least at the moment, but I don't see it changing any time soon) it should be a surprise to absolutely no one that I'm kicking off book reviews with another one of her books.

This time, we're headed back to the Ark, and to the King family.

Let's take a look at My Wounded Billionaire.

Tuesday 5 November 2019

Talkie Tuesday: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

"I solemnly swear that I'm up to no good."

Hello everyone!

We're back to our regular posting schedule!

After a full month of nothing but book-related posts, it's kind of fun to get back to movies, even though I'm looking at my backlog at the moment and wondering how the heck I'm going to even get through all of these before December, when I have the Christmas list.

I'll probably be doing these in January still.

Sounds about right!

Anyway, I'm not sure if you guys remember, but the last time we were in movie land, we were trying to learn magic and how to transfigure a mouse into a needle. Or, alternately, we were trying to figure out how a snake can possibly slither through plumbing when it didn't even know plumbing existed.

You know I'm talking about Harry Potter.

And it's now time to add extra flavour in a Prisoner of Azkaban.

Booktober Finale

ALRIGHT.

We made it! 31 days, 31 (and more) books, and Booktober is officially over for this year. I really enjoyed it, I thought it would be a kind of different take on the month and doing something new on the blog, so I may bring it back next year, but we'll see what happens honestly. It was definitely a nice break from the usual two massive blog posts per week, but I also kind of miss those, so I'll be happy to get back to them haha.

Happy All Saint's Day if you observe it wherever you are, and I'll see you all in my next blog post!

Hallowe'en Party (Booktober)

"Some memories are better buried."

And finally, the grand finale. The big bang. The curtain call. Of course I would have saved the best for last, especially when it comes to books you should read around Halloween time. And what better book is there than Agatha Christie's Hallowe'en Party? It has Poirot, it has mystery, it has murder, and it also features our favourite egg-head detective mincing around in his patent leather shoes. Out of all the books this month, this one has to be among my top favourites for autumnal reads, because it simply brings out the very best of the season.

Okay yes, it also brings you murder, but that's just Christie's thing.

At a Hallowe'en party, Joyce—a hostile thirteen-year-old—boasts that she once witnessed a murder. When no-one believes her, she storms off home. But within hours her body is found, still in the house, drowned in an apple-bobbing tub. That night, Hercule Poirot is called in to find the 'evil presence'. But first he must establish whether he is looking for a murderer or a double-murderer ...

All Souls Trilogy (Booktober)

"It begins with a discovery of witches."

What to say about the one witchy trilogy you absolutely NEED in your life? I was late to the Deborah Harkness train, but her All Souls Trilogy is absolutely stunning. It reminds you of Twilight, but in a very good way, and it brings all hands on deck to make the story believable, enchanting, and absolutely spectacular. Diana Bishop and Matthew de Clermont are in a race against the clock, against their own people, their beliefs, and time itself. Is there anything they can do to ensure not only their own survival, but the survival of witches, vampires and daemons?

Because it begins with absence and desire. And it begins with blood and fear.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell; but the real threat to the future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency ...

Cobweb Bride Trilogy (Booktober)
These Old Shades (Booktober)

Tuesday 29 October 2019

Cobweb Bride series (Booktober)

"Fare thee well, and blessed be, beloved!"

Trying to pick just one of these three books is absolutely impossible. Why? Because unlike with so many other trilogies where there's a strong beginning and then it all fizzles out, Vera Nazarian's Cobweb Bride has a strong start-up, even stronger middle, and an iron-clad finish. I've always been a sucker for Greek mythology, and this particular retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth is an incredibly unique, mesmerizing take on a tale as old as time.

If you get the chance - look these books up. I promise you, you WON'T regret it!

Many are called. She alone can save the world and become Death's bride. And in a world where no one can die, she alone can kill ... now that she’s Death’s Champion, what will Percy do? For the world is broken … a dark Goddess rises. Percy still has a difficult task to do, the greatest task of all … For in the end the Cobweb Bride awaits, together with the final answer.

These Old Shades (Booktober)

"You offend my nostrils."

If you want some good old 18th century sarcasm and sass, there's absolutely no better book than Georgette Heyer's These Old Shades. The first in a series of Regency novels, this one introduces the two characters who will basically be the mama and papa of the lot of them later. I've read the other books, but none have captured my heart so much as this one, where Satanas prowls the streets of Paris and wreaks havoc over the English countryside just because he can, making sure everybody knows who's boss.

Want to take a jaunt with the Devil himself? Autumn is prime time for it!

Under the reign of Louis XV, corruption and intrigue have been allowed to blossom in France, and Justin Alastair, the notorious Duke of Avon and proud of his soubriquet 'Satanas' flourishes as well. Then, from a dark Parisian back alley, he plucks Léon, a red-headed urchin with strangely familiar looks. Among the splendours of Versailles and the dignified mansions of England, Justin begins to unfold his sinister plans against the Comte de St Vire - until, that is, Léon becomes the ravishing beauty Léonie ...

Term Limits (Booktober)

"Remember, we know nothing."

Probably one of my favourite books of all time, though I admit it's an acquired taste. There is A LOT of politics in this one, it's based directly off the political ups and downs in Washington, DC, but Vince Flynn also brings a certain degree of realism into his writing whenever there are any Special Ops forces in his books, so. Term Limits doesn't have Mitch Rapp - but even without Ironman, the retired SEALs make up for it.

If you want to wind down the murky streets by the Potomac river, you don't have to go any further than this book!

In one bloody night, three of Washington's most powerful politicians are executed with surgical precision. Their assassins then deliver a shocking ultimatum to the American government: set aside partisan politics and restore power to the people. No one, they warn, is out of their reach—not even the president. Only Michael O'Rourke, a former U.S. Marine and freshman congressman, holds a clue to the violence ...

Boudica (Booktober)

"Your sister is Boudica, Bringer of Victory. Remember that."

Before Arthur and Merlin ... a warrior queen rose to defend her people. There have always been songs and tales coming from the mists of the British Isles, and Boudica is probably the most famous of all legends, not counting the fabled man who pulled the sword of the stone. But Boudica was flesh and blood, a woman who terrorized the Roman invaders and rose up in defiance against them when they tried to enslave her people. She paid dearly for that, of course, but even today, she remains a symbol of courage and bravery.

Long live the Queen!

Boudica means Bringer of Victory (from the early Celtic word “boudeg”). She is the last defender of the Celtic culture in Britain; the only woman openly to lead her warriors into battle and to stand successfully against the might of Imperial Rome -- and triumph.

The Lady of the Rivers (Booktober)

Friday 25 October 2019

The Lady of the Rivers (Booktober)

"Some women cannot march to the beat of a man's drum. Do you understand?"

So every once in a while I will pull out a Gregory novel, although I have to admit I prefer her Plantagenet ones to her Tudor ones - and even then only the first few! But Lady of the Rivers was a fascinating story for me, and for some reason it makes me think about autumn and falling rain what with it happening in foggy, murky England almost all the time. I know it's definitely not all true, but if you keep an open mind it can certainly be entertaining, plus Elizabeth Woodville's mother really WAS formidable!

I mean hey, only way to give birth to a future Queen, right?

Jacquetta, daughter of the Count of Luxembourg and kinswoman to half the royalty of Europe, was married to the great Englishman John, Duke of Bedford, uncle to Henry VI. Widowed at the age of 19, she took the extraordinary risk of marrying a gentleman of her household for love, and then carved out a new life for herself; this is the story of the real-life mother to the White Queen.
