Tome Thursday: Dark Lover

Hello everyone!

For some reason, I never actually got around to putting this book on my blog.

Or, alternately, finishing the series to begin with.

I know, I know, BLASPHEMY.

Dishonor.

All that jazz.

Unfortunately, however, once the series sort of stopped being as interconnected as it used to be - I think the author switched publishers and they focused on the newer books being more standalones than grouped together - my interest dropped.

I do have plans to finish, since I'm curious to read about the new generation we only meet as babies initially, but for right now, I think it best if we go right back to the beginning, true?

After all, what can an end mean if you don't know how it all started?

Without further ado, Dark Lover.

Tome Thursday: The Stars are Dying

Hello everyone!

Are you ready for this?

Because I'm not sure you are. I know I certainly wasn't, and I willingly signed up for whatever was coming at me at the time.

See a while ago, I kept seeing these gorgeous book covers (and similar book art) all from the same author. Bookstagram was going HARD, y'all, and eventually I caved and had a look around the author's page to see what it was all about.

Turns out, she's writing a fantasy series that's literally like someone wrote it especially for me.

So I grabbed the books and read the first one, but unfortunately then ran out of time as I had other ARCs waiting for me to read and review them.

Then this one came about - I'd seen the promos on her Instagram, but randomly stumbled over an open call for eARC readers, and signed up on a whim. I honestly didn't think I'd get it, and would have been fine just waiting for the book to release, but guess what? I GOT THE ARC.

And with the book releasing in a few days, here's your glowing review for it. What's it called? The Stars are Dying.

Tome Thursday: Walk the Plank

Hello everyone!

So just as I prepare to head to the seaside for vacation, I always make sure that the books I have on my reading list get cleared off before I do so, seeing as I don't feel like dragging all of them with me when I don't have to.

This is one of them!

It's the third in the batch of books I nabbed off BookSirens that one time, and I have to say that it was incredibly enjoyable, just as the first two.

But then I mean, pirates, right?

Nothing beats pirates in the middle of summer!

Especially when paired up with vampires for some reason or another ... that kind of thing sounds completely absurd when you think about it, but when you actually want to read it, you find it works out, somehow.

I don't know how, but it does. Marilyn Barr's Walk the Plank is up next, and hopefully you enjoy it.

Tome Thursday: The Dawn of Peace

Hello everyone!

I return with another vampire-themed book, or well, a connected one at least.

BookSirens is really good for feeding my obsession with these every once in a while, and then it all depends on my mood I suppose.

But I will admit that this prequel is a quick and easy read altogether, which definitely works in its favour.

I stumbled across Rebecca Hefner by complete accident when I picked up one of the ARCs she listed on the site, and then breezed through her other series without pausing to take a beat.

Her vampire one hasn't really laid such a claim on my heart and my attention as the first, but when there was a listing for a prequel I thought to myself, well, everyone and everything deserves a second chance, right?

So I went and requested to be added to the team.

It totally paid off.

Without further ado, let's just hop right into it, shall we? The Dawn of Peace, which is a very uplifting title, is up next!

Tome Thursday: Graveyard Waltz

Hello everyone!

For the first choice of my 2022 book blog entries, I picked one that I actually needed to finish and submit the review of during the holiday season, but I was a bit busy with holiday entries at that time.

Besides, I need something pretty epic for the start, right?

Like with the Talkie one!

And this one IS epic.

I mean to be fair, the first volume of this series was already pretty darn epic all on its own, and I reviewed it back in the summer of last year. I almost completely forgot about the fact that there was supposed to be a sequel until BookSirens kindly reminded me of that little bit of information.

Once I had it, though, I also had to nab the book ARC from the site as well.

Ain't nothing funnier than a necromancer and a vampire, let me tell you, although if we're being fair what's funnier might be the fact that there is a tear-inducing cliffhanger at the end!

Graveyard Waltz is up next.

Tome Thursday: Tempted by Twilight

Hello everyone!

I'm back with something that ISN'T Hunger Games related, even though I know I still have the prequel to read, but I needed a break from it so picked up something from BookSirens yet again.

For those of you who don't know yet, BookSirens is a site where you can sign up and pick up different ARCs from, from different authors and genres. The only limitations are how many books you can read to start off with, and how long you have for each book before you're asked to supply a review, on the site itself or on Goodreads, Amazon, etc.

I really like it, they usually give you 90 days, which is MORE than enough for 200 pages (rough estimate), and you can find some really cool hidden gems on there!

I've probably run into more than my share of books that I've fallen in love with thanks to them.

But I took a bit of a break over the summer holidays, and am now back to perusing their choices from the shelves, so here we are.

Tonight's pick is definitely one for this spooky autumn, as it deals with the supernatural, and then some.

Tome Thursday: The End of Hatred

Hello everyone!

So alright, this one took me ... a fair bit.

Like I said in one of my other posts, I will grab books off BookSirens quite often, but sometimes with the longer reading periods, it takes me a little before I manage to power through the lot of them.

Some are faster reads than others.

And some take me some time.

Tonight's choice has definitely been sitting there and tapping its foot impatiently for me to start browsing through the pages, and this week I FINALLY sat down so that I did just that. It only took me two days in the end, and that only because I really needed to take a break in between, or else I would have finished in one go I think.

But I mean, sometimes you need to stop looking at the words on the page, you know?

And so without further ado, let's jump right into my pick of the week, which is a vampire-inspired book, titled The End of Hatred.

Tome Thursday: Kiss Me Deadly

Hello everyone!

This week's book is one that I consider to be incredibly funny and entertaining, and one that I loved when I sat down to read the ARC copy I picked up from BookSirens.

Yep, it's that annoying time when I advertise the heck out of this site haha!

BookSirens, if you don't yet know, is an online community for book lovers and writers alike where you can find TONS of great reads for free, sign up to get the ARCs, and then read them by a due date that's generated by the site.

The only thing you need to do is leave a review after you've finished.

I mean, can it get any better than that?!?

Nope.

I tend to have one or two in the works all the time from there because the choices are excellent, and this month's really wasn't an exception either.

Kiss Me Deadly grabbed hold of me with the first sentence and didn't let go.

Midnight Sun (Booktober)

"And so the lion fell in love with the lamb ..."

More than a decade ago, we met Bella and Edward, and saw the story of a human teenager and vampire immortal fall in love through her eyes. Now, finally, Stephenie Meyer released the other side of the coin: the story told from Edward's point of view. Midnight Sun went through many ups and downs before it could arrive on our bookshelves, but now that it's here, of course it'll be divisive, because some people will love it, and some will say that it's just a rehash. But it's really not. Because we get to hear a whole lot more than just what happened in Twilight - we get to explore what it's like being Edward with his mind-reading ability. And we get to see the love story unfold again.

When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. But this unforgettable tale as told through Edward's eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire. As we learn more fascinating details about Edward's past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life. How can he justify following his heart if it means leading Bella into danger?

Tome Thursday: Midnight Sun

Hello everyone!

Well, after who knows how many years - 10? 12? 15? - it's FINALLY here.

Fans of the Twilight Saga have been practically BEGGING for this particular installment all that time, and the author finally decided this was the one open chapter from times past she wanted to close and put to rest.

I'm not going to lie, I was pretty stoked when news broke about the August release.

You can bet I grabbed this thing ASAP and read it through in two to three sittings.

Interestingly enough, while I thought it would take me a lot less, I needed to take my time with it to really enjoy it properly, which I did.

And before we dive straight in, let me just say, to all the haters out there: we all enjoy different things. If the boys can get a million installments of Fast and Furious, one more book for Twilight fans isn't going to break the world.

Midnight Sun is a worthy addition to any Twi-hard's shelf.

Tome Thursday: Where Winter Finds You

Hello everyone!

As I mentioned in last week's book post, I have a few stragglers left from my Christmas reading binge that should have honestly been done in December, but since there's only four Thursdays you have at your disposal then, it's really impossible to fit EVERYTHING in there.

Tonight's topic is one of them.

It probably doesn't seem too Christmas-y though since there really isn't much mention of the holiday, but what it IS is definitely cold and wintry and filled with ice and snow, which is pretty accurate for this time, I suppose.

Or mostly accurate. We all know how the weather is at the moment.

Anyway, if you're lucky you have some snow, but if not then you just have frost overnight and some weird warm temperatures over day. The times when we got to frolic in the fluff are long, long gone, and I don't think they're ever coming back.

But before I get too melancholy about it, let's take a look at Where Winter Finds You, shall we?

All Souls Trilogy (Booktober)

"It begins with a discovery of witches."

What to say about the one witchy trilogy you absolutely NEED in your life? I was late to the Deborah Harkness train, but her All Souls Trilogy is absolutely stunning. It reminds you of Twilight, but in a very good way, and it brings all hands on deck to make the story believable, enchanting, and absolutely spectacular. Diana Bishop and Matthew de Clermont are in a race against the clock, against their own people, their beliefs, and time itself. Is there anything they can do to ensure not only their own survival, but the survival of witches, vampires and daemons?

Because it begins with absence and desire. And it begins with blood and fear.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell; but the real threat to the future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency ...

Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter (Booktober)

"Some men are just too interesting to die."

To be honest with you, I didn't actually think I'd ever read this book. When I first saw it, I was like PFFFT, YEAH RIGHT! And then eventually curiosity won out, and I turned page after page of what turned out to be something entirely plausible. Of course you have to believe in lots of things: vampires, immortality, and so on and so forth, but by the end of the book, if you DO believe, you could honestly think that one of America's most widely-known presidents was, in fact, a vampire hunter in his spare time.

I mean. Stranger things have happened. Right?

While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years ...

Dracula (Booktober)

"Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!"

There is no Booktober without the one and only. Count Dracula waltzed into the world when Bram Stoker's novel got published, and basically began the vampire "obsession" although he's not nearly as romantic as all the new-age vamps running around! Hunted by Van Helsing and presented in countless iterations for our eyes to feast on, this book is a must if you want to spook yourselves a little bit. I know I did - I made the mistake of reading it after dark.

Let's just say I slept with the light on that night.

Side-note: a really good friend of mine told me if tonight's vampire was Edward Cullen she'd be put out. Well, it's definitely not Eddie!

Few readers will ever forget the nightmare atmosphere of Count Dracula's sinister castle in Transylvania, the prowlings of the Un-Dead, the blood-curdling tension . The story recounts the struggle of a group of men and a woman - Dr Seward, Dr Van Helsing and Jonathan Harker with his wife Mina - to destroy the vampire, whose sinister earth-filled coffins are discovered by Harker in a ruined chapel adjoining Dr Seward's asylum. Cruel and noble, evilly and fatally desirable to women, Dracula possesses a terrifying lust for power and, like Dr Jekyll or Conan Doyle's Moriarty, is one of the immortal fictional monsters.

Life and Death (Booktober)

"And so the lion fell in love with the lamb ..."

If you don't see at least ONE pass of foggy Forks, Washington during the autumn months, then you probably are living under a rock. Twilight hit the shelves waaay back when and became an instant hit - and a decade later Stephenie Meyer decided to switch things up a little, which is how Beau and Edythe came along. Not without its challenges, this book does continue the trend of murky views, pale, sparkly vampires, and teenagers intent on living forever, but it's a completely stand-alone novel (that COULD still be expanded into sequels, however).

And for some reason, I kind of prefer this version to the original.

When Beaufort Swan moves to the gloomy town of Forks and meets the mysterious, alluring Edythe Cullen, his life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. With her porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice and supernatural gifts, Edythe is both irresistible and enigmatic.

What Beau doesn't realize is the closer he gets to her, the more he is putting himself and those around him at risk. And it might be too late to turn back ...
