I know I unfortunately had to take a mini break this past Tuesday, but that's because real life just CONSPIRED against me, and I spent most of my time either at work, or sleeping off being work-tired.

 

Here I am now though, with a pretty banger of a book that literally JUST released.

 

Like, it released yesterday.

 

I can't be any more on the nose about it than that.

 

Lea Rose has quickly shot right up to my favourite authors list with Where We Burn, and I'm now determined to read her other books as well because, hello, when you find an author you really like, that's what you do.

 

I'll slowly but surely collect them all on here for your reviewing pleasure while I'm at it.

 

So without further ado, to tonight's book of choice: Velvet Thorns.

And happy Halloween!

 

Now, for those of us who don't really feel native to the holiday, this is the day of the year when ghosts, ghouls and witches come out to play.

 

For the old continent it's mostly a day to celebrate Reformation, but on the new one it's about parties and having fun (it seems to be the same with younger generations here as well but, as someone who saw the ascent of Halloween and watched the thing develop, I can honestly say I feel old LOL).

 

For me, personally, I don't particularly feel any sort of way about Halloween. Possibly because we have Mardi Gras here in February, but also because I don't like dressing up.

 

I do, however, enjoy some of the other media that gets released during this time of year, and I thought I'd throw it back a little for tonight's post.

 

Five years back, to be precise. To a small little movie called The House with a Clock in its Walls.

Talkie Tuesday: LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales

Hello everyone!

Ready for spooky season?

Disney wants you to be!

And Disney has also figured out that these one-off, LEGO-inspired specials seem to be going down super well with their audiences, which I'm totally on board with.

They're a whole boatload of fun!

If you'll remember, there was a holiday special last year right before Christmas time, but this year they decided to go for the haunted version of it and make something that might give viewers a chance to enjoy Halloween before it arrives.

I mean, Poe Dameron crash-landing on Mustafar? Can you IMAGINE the chaos???

Well, you don't have to imagine any more, not really, because we're taking a look at the LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales tonight, and Poe just happens to be our star!

And finally, the grand finale. The big bang. The curtain call. Of course I would have saved the best for last, especially when it comes to books you should read around Halloween time. And what better book is there than Agatha Christie's Hallowe'en Party? It has Poirot, it has mystery, it has murder, and it also features our favourite egg-head detective mincing around in his patent leather shoes. Out of all the books this month, this one has to be among my top favourites for autumnal reads, because it simply brings out the very best of the season.

Okay yes, it also brings you murder, but that's just Christie's thing.

At a Hallowe'en party, Joyce—a hostile thirteen-year-old—boasts that she once witnessed a murder. When no-one believes her, she storms off home. But within hours her body is found, still in the house, drowned in an apple-bobbing tub. That night, Hercule Poirot is called in to find the 'evil presence'. Fans around the world hasten to King's Cross station on September 1 for their chance to board the train that might take them to a very magical castle, if they're lucky. Nobody knew how big Harry Potter was going to get when The Philosopher's Stone was first published, but it's safe to say no fall read would be complete without pumpkin juice, floating candles, and trolls in the dungeons.

Rowling sure knew what she was doing!

Also, fun fact, I picked the 'adult' cover version of the book. It's my favourite.

Harry Potter thinks he is an ordinary boy - until he is rescued by a beetle-eyed giant of a man, enrols at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, learns to play Quidditch and does battle in a deadly duel. The Reason: HARRY POTTER IS A WIZARD!

Talkie Tuesday: Hallowe'en Party

Hello everyone!

One day before Halloween evening on the 31st, and a big, big holiday in my country which has nothing to do with Halloween and everything with the Reformation period in Europe, and here I am with a VERY witchy, Halloween-y movie review. 

I think the only thing that could be more on-point would be the Addams Family.

As it happens, however, I have quite the fondness for a certain Belgian detective.

Yes, he's BELGIAN people, he's NOT French!

And of course Agatha Christie was more than kind to focus one of her books right around the time of Halloween and the festive period.

Then it got adapted and the marvelous David Suchet portrayed the detective in question, so what more could you ask for at this time of year?

Let's dig our teeth right into Poirot's Hallowe'en Party!

Talkie Tuesday: Good Witch Tale of Two Hearts

"True love always finds a way."

Hello everyone!

Finally, the wait is over, and I can honestly say this was probably one of my most anticipated Hallmark productions yet - mostly because I fell in love with Cassie ten years or so ago when she first moved to Middleton and made everybody think she rode in on a broomstick. 

I kid you not.

Anyway, Good Witch as a series is better suited for audiences than the long movies that only air once a year or so (but they're still pretty awesome to watch!), and I can't WAIT for the actual season.

This was just a taste of things to come and an interesting preview, not to mention, hello, who can do Halloween better than a witch?

Or, a couple of witches, actually, or a trio, depending, since you have Cassie, Grace AND Abigail on the job.

A Tale of Two Hearts is full of Halloween magic, some mystery, and happily ever after for some.

Tome Thursday: Trick or Treat

Hello everyone!

So alright, this book might not be the most seasonal thing I've ever done, but I just finished reading it a couple of days ago and, as seems to always be the case with books written by Serenity Woods, I loved it.

Side-note, I have a bunch of them I haven't read yet to take along with me to the seaside when I galop away for two weeks, so there you go!

Ahem.

To be frank about this book, it took me forever to find it, because for some reason or other my usual retailer just didn't seem to have any working links. I dislike not having the complete collection when it comes to books, however, so obviously I was stubborn enough to keep on pushing and ensure that I was going to have the entire lot.

After all, when it comes to books like Trick or Treat, you basically NEED the rest to go full-on steamy.
