Tome Thursday: The Perfect Sister

Hello everyone!

So for tonight's blog post, we're going back into the past a little bit and working through a murder mystery, some political intrigue, and a whole lot of character drama, because we're just that cool.

LOL.

If you know me (and if you've been following this blog, you probably do at least a little by now) then you'll know I enjoy looking through any and all mystery books. I've been an Agatha Christie fan since I can't even remember when, but the Queen of Mystery (and murder AND mayhem, usually including harmless looking little old ladies or egg-head shaped detectives with big mustaches) tends to make her way onto my reading list often enough.

When I see something that might resemble that, I go all for it.

BookSirens is definitely a good place to be in that regard as there are quite a few mysteries like that around, and when I saw the title I'm working with tonight, I knew I had to read it. I didn't end up liking it quite as much as I'd hoped, but it was still entertaining to a degree.

The Perfect Sister isn't quite as perfect as the title says. Then again they never are.

Booktober 2020

Hello everyone!

Just like last year I'll be bringing you something different this October.

Well, different in the sense that it won't just be the two or three blog posts per week which I would normally do on a regular basis.

Booktober is back!

Every day from tomorrow on I'll be posting a blurb about a book I've read on this blog (and on my Instagram account), all the way through to the end of the month. That'll give you 30+ books to check out if you haven't already.

So on with the show, and happy Booktober!

Booktober Finale

ALRIGHT.

We made it! 31 days, 31 (and more) books, and Booktober is officially over for this year. I really enjoyed it, I thought it would be a kind of different take on the month and doing something new on the blog, so I may bring it back next year, but we'll see what happens honestly. It was definitely a nice break from the usual two massive blog posts per week, but I also kind of miss those, so I'll be happy to get back to them haha.

Happy All Saint's Day if you observe it wherever you are, and I'll see you all in my next blog post!

Booktober!

Hello everyone!

A slightly different post from me, and on an entirely different day.

I know, I'm really going for it, huh?

What I want to say is this: it's October. And this means BOOKTOBER.

Now hold up. There are many, many definitions out there on the world wide web about just what this is supposed to be. I've found a couple; in one, you have to read one book per day in October. In another, it's a month-long read-along in groups, and other cultural activities geared towards reading that bring the community together.

See what I mean?

Mostly it has to do with books, however.

So I'm doing Booktober, too!

What's it going to look like?

Every day, I'll be posting a book I've read onto my blog with a little blurb or a quote or something from the book itself to go with it. This means that by the end of the month, you'll have 31 (potentially 31+) books to check out if you haven't already read them!

Cool, huh?

Get your broomstick and tag along for the ride, then, and I can promise you heaps of interesting titles to sink your teeth into.

Happy Booktober!

xx

Tome Thursday: Two by Two

Hello everyone!

Yet again, I find myself in that inevitable trap that I will sometimes fall into. It's called the Sparks Syndrome.

Yeah, I named it. Aren't I cute?

The point of this Sparks Syndrome is that, every once in a while, despite my better judgment and DEFINITELY despite what I KNOW will turn out true for every one of his books, I will INEVITABLY pick up one of his (one of the newer ones, that is) and read through it, because something compels me to do so.

Maybe it's my obsessive compulsive mind that keeps telling me I have to READ EVERYTHING OR ELSE. RAWR.

Ahem.

Anyway.

So I went and decided that, out of the two newer ones I hadn't yet read (these being See Me and Two by Two) I was going to pick the one with the cute little girl on the cover, meaning, Two by Two.

Tome Thursday: The Count of Monte Cristo

Hello everyone!

As I've promised, here is the accompanying blog post to Tuesday's movie review, because, as some of the most memorable movies that have ever been made, a lot of them are based off literary works.

The Count of Monte Cristo was no exception.

The thing with the movie, however, was that it was pretty severely hacked down. If you can imagine a tree with a lot of branches and leaves and everything, that would be the book that Alexandre Dumas (Pere) wrote down.

And then take a chainsaw, rev it up, and hack off most of the foliage.

Then you get the movie.

No offense meant to the movie makers, of course - they took the main story of the book and dropped the accompanying ones, and no one is any wiser unless you've actually sat down to read the monstrous thing itself.

Trust me, it should come with its own insurance.

Tome Thursday: Blood Kiss

Hello everyone!

So I'm back to reading about vampires, which, really, shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Every once in a while, I'll stumble over some book or book series that will give me my needed bloodsucker dose, although admittedly not everyone does it with as much fanfare as JR Ward, I think.

If anyone has been keeping track of my blog (which I hope you have, but oh well, fingers crossed!), I've been a Ward fan since a very good friend of mine introduced me to the series.

Or, well, the story goes like this: she kept on talking about it, and I sort of kept it in the back of my mind, that I have to read these books, but at the time I didn't have my ereader yet, so it was a bit of a problem until I figured out I could convert the files to PDF, which could then be read on my poor phone (the thing might have died a thousand deaths over one book ... I am still chagrined over that) to my heart's content.

And I was hooked.

Not only are these vampires badass, six-foot-sixers, the lot of them, with black belts in martial arts and zero clue in social behaviour, but they're also sexy as hell.

No surprise to anyone, then, that when the spin-off series was announced, I squealed.

Tome Thursday: The Dwarves

Hello everyone!

I'm back into the realm of fantasy or science fiction, depending how you look at it right now, although I have to admit that this book is pretty much fantasy when it all boils down to it. Epic fantasy, maybe? That, too, but I wouldn't be so sure according to the reviews I've seen on Amazon or Goodreads.

Not that I usually care about those.

To me, the total number of good reviews doesn't say whether or not the book is good or bad. It just tells me that I may find it to be different than what the other readers thought about it. I've seen this happen with movies more often than books, since IMDB tends to have ratings that really do fool people. If you judge a movie just by the rating, you can miss out on a lot of great ones because the only ones who actually review are the people who disliked it. Me, I try to be objective.

But back to books.

Markus Heitz is a German author, and I first saw his books on accident while browsing in the store one day. They attracted me because of the fact that they were, apparently, about Dwarves only. So I eventually decided, what the heck, let's try it!

Saturday Snippet: Bookshelf Tour, part 1

Hello everyone!

So, as promised, I will be doing a bookshelf tour in these blog posts (unless something else positively fascinating catches my attention), and today it's time to go to the top shelf. Now, to be perfectly honest, that's just ONE bookshelf as a whole that I'll be going through at the moment. But one wall of my room is entirely filled with them, so I might do a couple more, depending. Fact: all the pictures are taken with my phone camera, so if the quality might be a bit grainy sometimes ... that's why.

And here we go! As you can see, at the very top I am graced by some games and toys. Ahem. The first one, The Lord of the Rings: The Search, is an oldie, back from my LOTR-craze days. Fun fact: my sister and I played this only once, and she beat me, regardless of the fact that she had never seen LOTR before in her life at that point. I was too humiliated to play again afterwards! The next are Manga cards, which I didn't want for playing purposes, but more for the fact that the ilustrations on the cards are cool. Go figure. Next, a figurine of Elizabeth Swann from At World's End, and at the end a box full of Star Wars figurines. I may or may not be a bit of a geek.

Moving on to actual books.

Saturday Snippet

Hello everyone!

So apparently, starting with next Saturday I'm going to be doing a bookshelves tour here with the Snippet blogs, as there has been some interest about that. I would have started it tonight already, but unfortunately I forgot to take pictures in daylight so they looked horrible with artificial one and I decided against it.

I'll be doing it one shelf at a time though, maybe two, depending, so it might take a bit as one entire wall in my room is dedicated to books and DVDs ... I might have issues haha.

In the meantime though, I was so thrilled with Dancing with the Stars this week! They have some really good dancers this season, and I mean ... I might just be fangirling a little over Nick Carter.

What can I say, I listened to Backstreet Boys when I was a teenager.

Tome Thursday: The Queen of the Tearling

Hello everyone!

It's back to the books (not the drawing board this time) and I was honestly surprised in the past week when I noticed a lot of youtube reviews popping up for the one I'm going to talk about today. It's one of those coincidences I suppose, given that I honestly hadn't thought much about it to begin with (the review I man) and obviously I seem to have missed some of the reviews in the first place when I was looking through the internet to see whether or not anyone had ever said anything about this particular book before. And how did I find it? Well, to be honest, I didn't; I had seen it in the bookstore, but after checking the back of it and reading the summary, I wasn't initially drawn to it. My mother, on the other hand, thought it might be one of those easy romance books she enjoys on her downtime, but hey presto, there's no romance in this book! So it ended up with me.

I'm talking about 'The Queen of the Tearling' by Erika Johansen, which is an interesting title all in itself without knowing the details, AND there is supposedly a movie production in the works, with Emma Watson already attached to it. Hmm, this certainly did call for a read and review!

First Blog

Hi everyone!

A lot of people seem to be writing blogs these days, so I decided I'd give it a go, too. I've mostly seen them use Blogger.com, so it seemed like a natural choice to try out, and so far all I can say are positive things. It really is as easy as everyone says it is!

Unfortunately, if you're looking for make-up reviews or 'a day in the life of' posts, this isn't the right place for you. I'm the kind of girl who doesn't really do much in terms of make-up, anyway. Less is more! What you'll find here will mostly be reviews on movies I've seen, books I've read (or am reading) and reviews of TV shows I'm currently watching. I do A LOT of this, so I decided, why not share my thoughts about it? I comment as I go along, anyway.

To make things a bit more organized, and since I don't have the time to blog every day, this blog will currently be split into three sections: Talkie Tuesday, where you'll find movie reviews (or talking picture reviews, if you like!), Tome Thursday, where I'll talk about the books I've read, and Synopsis Saturday, when I'll sit down to give brief overviews of the shows that I watched over the week.

Basically, these last will probably be the most diverse, as I watch quite a lot of shows (juggling them around my daily schedule), but I'll get into details this Saturday! For now, I think this intro is getting long enough. Expect to see the first movie review sometime tonight!

Have a good one x
