Tome Thursday: Snowfall and Secrets

Hello everyone!

And welcome to the final Christmas-themed review of the calendar year!

Man, it blew over fast.

Come next week, we're looking at some really exciting works to review, because did I read some FANTASTIC books as the year drew to a close.

I plan on reading a couple more of those but, for the time being, let me just say most of January is already filled up review wise.

As for tonight?

Tonight, we take a hike to snowy Michigan, the land where there's plenty of snow measured in actual feet, which I haven't seen in a heck of a long time.

Kimmy Loth wrote a romance series, you see, and the first book in it is called Snowfall and Secrets.

Talkie Tuesday: The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

"Everything you need is inside.

Hello everyone!

I hope you've had a fantastic Christmas, one where, even if not everything went according to plan, there was at least one relative that got cranky and something broke, you STILL enjoyed yourselves and spent it in the company of your nearest and dearest.

The older we get, the more I think we come to realize it isn't presents, but the people that make the holidays bright.

... which is probably why in this house, we still have presents under the tree and will be waiting to open some of them with my sister once she's well enough to come home after a bout with the plague.

Life, eh?

BUT that aside, it's time for another Christmas movie, the last in this series as we move on to something else next week, so of course I had to go with a classic, even if in a re-telling.

Because Disney released their own version: The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.

Tome Thursday: The Christmas Deal

Hello everyone!

Yes, finally, we'll have the entire series here on the blog, as it should have been all along.

And ironically, I kind of did the reviews backwards a little bit, seeing as last week's book was the current - and thus far LAST - book in the series.

BUT that said, we've now become the ultimate Pokemon trainers and caught them all!

Ha.

Of course this is also the spot where I learn it really is the way Miss Andrews writes her twenty-somethings that apparently doesn't sit well with me anymore, but that's beside the point, because I'm also rather sure that I've read some of her books with twenty-somethings and LIKED them.

I digress, and I'm rambling.

So without further ado, let's take a look at how it all started, shall we? In a nifty little book that's only about two hundred pages long, titled The Christmas Deal.

Talkie Tuesday: The Secret Gift of Christmas

"It's not presents, but our presence that matters most for Christmas."

Hello everyone!

What is this, new devilry?

I am in fact channeling my inner Boromir here, because in my experience from seasons past, I have never, and I mean NEVER watched THREE Christmas movies in a row from Hallmark and liked all of them so much as I have this year.

Now don't get me wrong.

Hallmark has more hits than misses but, with so many holiday flicks in their seasonal programming block, and this being their biggest of all the fiscal year - I mean Countdown to Christmas, of course - there's bound to be stuff that just doesn't mesh well.

Not this time though.

And isn't THAT just something else?

The Secret Gift of Christmas just comes in and keeps on giving!

Tome Thursday: The Christmas Veto

Hello everyone!

And welcome to the next installment in our Christmas book review saga, which has unfortunately rather missed its mark.

Ah well, there's bound to be some, when you read as many holiday-themed books as I do!

I'm not too fussed about it, but I'm minorly disappointed, because I tend to enjoy books by this particular author for the most part.

It just feels like something's missing in this one.

Interestingly, I've also noticed that I'm missing the very first in this little grouping of hers, so I may go back and read it again to put it on here, finally, and have the full collection that way.

That sounds like fun, doesn't it? Especially since I DO have book numero due while I'm at it.

My logic is impeccable, obviously.

Without further ado, however, let's dive right into The Christmas Veto, by Keira Andrews.

Talkie Tuesday: Mystery on Mistletoe Lane

"Christmas is about family."

Hello everyone!

And welcome to the second of our Christmas movie review nights, which is once again turning out to be a success. I'm actually honestly surprised!

Usually, the way things go is, I find the perfect movie to start off with, but then they slowly peter out the longer I watch them through the duration of December. It's as if I start at the top and then gradually slide downwards!

But not this time.

No, this time, I got two winners in a row, which DOES make me slightly nervous for the remainder LOL but, we shall persevere!

First, we have a minor mystery to solve.

And we need to find some reindeer while we're at it.

Tome Thursday: Mistletoe and the Billionaire Boss

Hello everyone!

And welcome to a very fantastic opening into our Christmas book reading extravaganza.

We already had a heap of luck with our movie choice this week (have you seen My Norwegian Holiday yet?), and now our streak continues with the book I've chosen.

Or, well, had chosen for me! LOL.

See, when you open up your mailbox during a routine daily check, and see an email from your favourite contemporary romance author saying that the ARC for her next book in a series you adore is ready for you to read ...

You drop everything - and I mean literally everything - and set aside a time to gobble it up!

It took me a little longer than normal to finish this because work is turning into insanity as we head further into December, but, I thoroughly enjoyed every single moment.

So buckle up, we're heading back to New Zealand with Serenity Woods' latest installment in her Boss in a Billion series, Mistletoe and the Billionaire Boss.

Talkie Tuesday: My Norwegian Holiday

"It's a good thing I don't believe in fate.

Hello everyone!

And welcome, once again, to the Christmas extravaganza that's been a part of this blog for, oh, many, many years now.

Like in previous seasons, each year I choose movies and books specifically themed around Christmas to read, watch and review for you on here, and most of the time we even have plenty of hits (even if we have a couple of misses along the way too).

Tonight's choice is no different.

Somehow, I've been lucky, because I usually manage to hit the jackpot with the first choice each year, and this one's no exception.

Of course I also always (or almost always) turn to Hallmark to provide all my holiday celebratory movies, so it should come as no surprise that that's where tonight's choice is from.

Countdown to Christmas on this blog begins right now, with My Norwegian Holiday!

Tome Thursday: Shadows of the Dark Realm

Hello everyone!

And welcome to the last "regular" book review until 2024, because as of next week, we begin our Christmas-themed extravaganza which has seen us through many a-holiday season here on this blog, of course.

Hey, let a girl live. I LOVE me some Christmas!

But I also love picking up new and exciting stories, too.

Tonight's choice is one of them, although it still has some ways to go before it can be perfectly polished and on par with the greats like Tolkien and Jordan.

Nevertheless, it's good. It drew me in and made me want to figure out where the heck it was going, and how it was going to end, and definitely gave me some twists along the way as I read it.

I was also pleasantly surprised to be approached by the author who so graciously sent me an ARC of his book in the first place. Doesn't matter for how long I've been doing this, it still humbles me immensely when people reach out like that. I'm here for it!

And so without further ado: Shadows of the Dark Realm, by Tyler Edwards.

Talkie Tuesday: The Little Mermaid Live

"Watch and you'll see, someday I'll be, part of your world ..."

Hello everyone!

Something just a smidgeon different for you all tonight.

Or well, a return to my roots, one could say.

Once upon a time, you see, I used to LIVE for these movies - I even watched a bunch, reviewed a fair few as well, because why not?

So then when Disney+ suggested stuff to me after watching the newest The Little Mermaid take, I was like

why not?

Which means you get to sit back, relax, and read through as I discuss the merits of on stage singing during a special viewing of The Little Mermaid.

And bemoan that I never got to see it.

Live, that is. The Little Mermaid Live.

Tome Thursday: The Witch of Faymeria Wood

Hello everyone!

Tonight I bring you something a little different.

You know I enjoy a good retelling, don't you? Of course you do, you've seen me gush about it on here plenty of times, and will probably see me do it again in the very near future, not to mention more.

Well, it's a retelling tonight.

What's better is it's a REVERSE retelling, aka the roles of the fantasy tale were telling are going to be reversed for our reading pleasure.

I picked the book up on a whim on BookSirens - you remember, the online service providing free ARCs so you leave reviews on your preferred site of choice for upcoming authors? Yes, that service.

Anyway, I picked it up because it sounded intriguing, and I've always wanted a good representation of Sleeping Beauty. I absolutely got it in this one. Hypathia Rae might be an author worth watching now with this debut novel of hers!

The Witch of Faymeria Wood, ladies and gentlemen.

Talkie Tuesday: The Litte Mermaid

"Don't be held back by what you think SHOULD be. Think only of what IS."

Hello everyone!

And welcome to the land under the sea!

Well, the kingdom, empire, whatever you'd like to call it, I suppose.

In any event, welcome to me FINALLY catching up on the current trends and sitting down so that I could watch the latest Disney live action re-imagining of a beloved fairytale

It feels like this is going to be the newest trend for the company giant, although they do periodically release original, animated (and live action) pieces. Yes, I'm looking at you, Wish.

Which, I still need to watch as well, right after the Marvel movies.

But I'm getting off-track here.

Live action movies have a tendency to either go really well, or really wrong, and I feel like tonight's choice is actually really well done, in compare and contrast with some of the others.

So flip your fins and let's go follow the siren song of The Little Mermaid.

Tome Thursday: Iron Flame

Hello everyone!

And welcome back to Basgiath.

Oh you all knew I'd be going there, particularly after being LATE as all get-out for Fourth Wing thanks to my laptop issues back in the day.

I have no such ones now.

And I have a physical copy for the book to boot!

Ahem.

So let's not chatter too much and waste time while we have it, because there are a bunch of impatient dragons waiting, one of which is probably the biggest, grouchiest, sarcastic Dragon Dad of all time, and who needs to hang with Optimus Prime just so they can compare experiences.

I bet that would make for an awesome conversation.

But without further ado - ladies and gentlemen: Iron Flame.

Tuesday Thoughts: The Gilded Age

"Persistence is the key to everything. Persistence - and patience.

Hello everyone!

I have a slightly shorter blog post for you all today, and I hope you'll forgive me for it, but I did try and at least combine a few of my thoughts on the matter within it.

You see, a few show seasons ago HBO launched it's new period drama that I would have checked out for the era alone, but they billed one of the best names in the industry under its star power: Christine Baranski.

And if you know Baranski, you KNOW she never picks a bad role!

Nor did she do so in this one, where she serves us a weekly dose of realism and sarcasm tightly laced into a corset with eyebrows that could challenge Elrond.

I love it.

So if you want to take a quick look at glitz, glamour and a whole lot of humour along with the drama, look no further: we're talking The Gilded Age tonight.

Tome Thursday: Gift of Water

Hello everyone!

And once again, welcome back to the land of Teutonica.

Yes, yes, I’m getting boring I know, but don’t worry – this is the last book of the series I’ll be reviewing for a while, because the next one doesn’t release for a little bit.

Of course once it DOES, there’ll be a review on here, you can bet as much.

But I think that we can leave the witches and their priests to their own devices after this, don’t you?

In any event, it’s time to finally review the one book that’s eluded me because of my laptop troubles, which I read back on summer vacation and didn’t get to up until now.

Not a novella, but none of these are long enough to really cause headaches, so here we go, shall we?

Gift of Water, ladies and gentlemen.

Talkie Tuesday: The Wheel of Time

"The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills."

Hello everyone!

And welcome, once again, to the many multiple turnings of this thing we like to call ... but wait, let's rewind slightly.

I'm a little late this year with my review of the second season to this show, partly because there's just been SO MUCH to catch up on, and partly because my job keeps me from keeping up as well as I used to while jobless.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm thankful to HAVE a job in the current climate, but it's true that you're severely hampered by this stuff LOL.

So anyway, I finally literally blew through the eight episodes of the second season, and MAN is the show getting better and better with each installment. It's like someone's been reborn on the turning of the Wheel or something.

Yep, I know you know what tonight's all about: the second season of Amazon's Wheel of Time adaptation!

Thursday, 2 November 2023

Tome Thursday: Gift of Air

Hello everyone!

And welcome back to yet another wandering into the land of Teutonica.

I may, at some point, stop writing reviews solely about this series - but I have to admit that they have me hooked, and as it's ongoing, and I'm kind of lagging behind (I'm missing the latest entry in the mainstream books!) I need to catch up.

So here we are.

Having just recently discovered that the prequel to the ENTIRE series was free on Kobo, you can probably guess what happened.

Yep, I grabbed it.

Then I read it in one sitting.

And here I am now with a review for you guys.

Gift of Air is now here.

Talkie Tuesday: The House with a Clock in its Walls

"I want to show you what a little weird can do."

Hello everyone!

And happy Halloween!

Now, for those of us who don't really feel native to the holiday, this is the day of the year when ghosts, ghouls and witches come out to play.

For the old continent it's mostly a day to celebrate Reformation, but on the new one it's about parties and having fun (it seems to be the same with younger generations here as well but, as someone who saw the ascent of Halloween and watched the thing develop, I can honestly say I feel old LOL).

For me, personally, I don't particularly feel any sort of way about Halloween. Possibly because we have Mardi Gras here in February, but also because I don't like dressing up.

I do, however, enjoy some of the other media that gets released during this time of year, and I thought I'd throw it back a little for tonight's post.

Five years back, to be precise. To a small little movie called The House with a Clock in its Walls.

Tome Thursday: Gift of Light

Hello everyone!

And welcome back to the land of Teutonica.

Yep, we're back with the witches, appropriate, isn't it, given that we're headed towards the end of October?

Although speaking of, WHERE has the time gone??? I really wonder.

I swear it was just yesterday when we walked into autumn and now we're already halfway through it, marching straight towards winter.

No clue where the time went. None.

BUT back to the actual point of this blog post, which is that we're taking a look at a prequel novella of sorts for the Elemental Bloodlines series, you know, the one by C. L. Carhart?

The books I've been reviewing on here for a while now?

Well, they're getting an addition tonight, and it's called Gift of Light.

Tuesday, 24 October 2023

Talkie Tuesday: Red, White & Royal Blue

"It isn't what we say or think that defines us, but what we do.

Hello everyone!

This week, I'm back with what's probably the most beloved or at the very least the most anticipated (at the time) movie of summer 2023.

Just like the book which it adapted, this movie covers the perfect story, in my personal opinion.

Why?

Well, because the world has seen a thousand iterations of ‘princess meets first son’ or ‘first daughter meets prince’, and we usually love them because we care about the stories BEHIND the amalgamation of whoever it is that’s falling in love.

Here, however, we get the prince meets the first son, and for some reason, because it’s a gay romance, it becomes even better.

In my opinion, at least.

Tome Thursday: Alice and the Billionaire Boss

Hello everyone!

Tonight's blog will be a much briefer over-view of a book than I would usually do because I ran out of time.

This bakery job thing is ferocious, I tell you, and I'm already dreading the 30th because the two days afterwards are holidays when we're closed - people will go NUTS, I'm sure.

Anyway!

Last week I realized I completely failed and didn't review a book by Serenity Woods.

Turns out, I didn't do it because my computer was out of commission at the time, so here I am now.

Because one can never have too many billionaires in their life.

Another one, and one of my personal favourites, really, is a feature in this particular literary work of art, and his name is Kip.

Talkie Tuesday Musings: Loki

"It's harder to stay."

 Hi everyone!

So tonight's post isn't actually going to be a full on post because I'm cheating a little bit.

I was fully going to do Red, White & Royal Blue but got side-tracked during the weekend so it got postponed over to next week (I hope ... we'll see how it goes!).

This meant, however, that I would need to figure something else out for this Tuesday.

Enter our favourite god of mischief who just so happens to currently be airing on Disney+ if you've been paying at least a little bit of attention.

Now I'm not going to lie, I won't be going fully into details about all that's happened or hasn't happened.

Mostly I'll just be musing out loud.

Ready?

Then let's have a look at the first two episodes of Loki, season 2.

Thursday, 12 October 2023

Tome Thursday: Beauty and the Billionaire Boss

Hello everyone!

As always happens, we return to one of my favourite authors of all time, if not THE favourite, at least in the contemporary romance genre.

Because if it isn't broke, why fix it, right?

Ha!

I tend to truly enjoy reading about good men who have a lot of money but don't turn into assholes about it. When all is said and done, I firmly believe that there's plenty more of those in the world than there are idiots, we just hear about the idiots more often because, well, idioting.

And Serenity Woods likes to even the odds for the good guys by keeping on writing so many good books!

The Boss in a Billion series has been steadily growing and will continue to do so with a third trilogy set in another, different city of New Zealand, so I'm stoked.

Then again, I always am.

Without more blathering from me, let's have a quick look at Beauty and the Billionaire Boss, shall we?

Tuesday, 10 October 2023

Talkie Tuesday: Ahsoka

"May the Force be with you."

Hello everyone!

This week, we take a look at what wrapped the week before.

I'm even on time with this, can you believe it?

Usually, I'm absolute RUBBISH trying to keep up with things, but episodic shows releasing weekly are actually my jam.

It's what I enjoyed watching all through my university years and what we were always used to seeing on our TV screens, honestly, so this whole binge culture is completely anathema to me.

I don't binge. LOL. That's not my style.

But I DO often travel to a galaxy far, far away, because their stories tend to always engage me on some level.

And while people are calling this the Mandoverse, I prefer calling it Filoniverse.

So bring your popcorn and your sarcasm, because we're hitching a ride on the Ghost to see what Ahsoka has in store!

Tome Thursday: Fourth Wing

Hello everyone!

As you can see, we're back on the blogging grind, which I'm happy with to be honest.

I've missed being able to type my thoughts out haha!

Tonight we take a look at internet sensation which has taken the book world by storm. Literally and pretty much also figuratively and everything in between.

I'll admit that I never would have picked it up ... but a really good friend of mine, one of my best friends even, just kept on and on about how good this was, so I thought to myself, you know what? If so many are saying this is good, then I'll read it too.

I haven't regretted it since, and have picked up an actual physical copy of the book.

Because this is what I do: I read e-books then decide whether or not I want the actual thing.

So without further ado, it's time to put on our flying leathers, pin our hair back, and get ready to kick some serious ass.

Basgiath college awaits in Fourth Wing.

Tuesday, 3 October 2023

Talkie Tuesday: The Witcher

"Never lost, always found."

Hello everyone!

And welcome back!

I know, I know, I literally fell off the face of the planet.

Here's the thing: my keyboard died. Yep, I killed it, and then once I took the laptop in for fixing, Slovenia experienced some truly horrible flooding (think New York current levels) which delayed the repair as the spare parts got lost somewhere in the waters or something.

Then, to top it all off, I started a new job, which took some getting used to (since, while I usually got up at 4.30, I now have to rise at 3.30 if I want to be there when we open at 5!).

BUT suffice to say that we have now persevered, and the trials are over.

Which means we can sit back and have a look at something that's been finished for a while but, I am DETERMINED to have the entire thing which I've covered so far on here, as I won't be continuing with season 4.

Henry Cavill was my Geralt, so one last time: The Witcher.

Tome Thursday: The Nightmara Affair

Hello everyone!

And welcome back to the review of officially the second book of the series, but the third review on this site seeing as we started the journey with the prequel, three weeks ago.

Man, time sure does fly, doesn't it?

I've been noticing that more and more lately.

I also have to be completely honest.

I'm disappointed with this one, and starting to regret reading so many romances all at once, because I keep forgetting that the reason I tend to avoid them is because the heroines really, truly, slay all my desire to do so.

This book was unfortunately no different.

However, I'm going to let you decide on it, as we go along, so without further ado, let's have a look at our choice for the night.

Tuesday, 25 July 2023

Talkie Tuesday: The Last Unicorn

"You have all the power you need if you dared to look for it."

Hello everyone!

Well, you probably knew we were going to keep on keeping on with the animated series here on the blog for the last movie review this month.

Next week we return to the realm of The Witcher, if I manage to binge over the weekend BUT, that said and done, we have to have a little romp down Man's road for a bit.

Yeah, see, I really love these oldies. They make me cry at times, but they're the best.

And I remember watching this one when I was super too little to understand much at all, so here I am, re-watching it again and understanding things a heck of a lot more now than I ever did as a little girl.

I also want to read the book now, too. Of course all the best stuff is based off books!

So without further ado, let's hop right into it.

Let's look into the sky where through through the clouds a path is torn, look and see her how she sparkles: it's The Last Unicorn.**

Tome Thursday: The Enchanted Bird

Hello everyone!

And welcome back to the realm of Calatini, where magic is used openly, balls are inspired by Regency, and love flourishes.

Isn't that a poetic kind of introduction?

But as I stated last week, I'm going to be making my way through the books written by Katherine Dotterer as I'm enjoying the world-building she's investing into.

Some of the characters could potentially sometimes use a bit of additional work, but that aside, it's actually an enjoyable investment.

As always, a huge thanks to BookSirens for allowing me to grab these ARCs to begin with, as I'm reasonably sure there would have been no other option for me to find this particular series otherwise. I didn't even know I was looking before the site sent me an email with one of the books in there for a suggestion!

So without further ado, let's slip into our best attire and shake off the dancing cobwebs.

Talkie Tuesday: The Land Before Time

"Some things you see with your eyes, others you see with your heart."

Hello everyone!

I hope you're ready with your Kleenex and your chocolate, because tonight's post is going to be a doozy.

That's right, I'm on an old cartoon animation kick.

And what better way to keep going ... than by going for what, it has been said before, is probably ranked among the top ten saddest movies of all time?

Yes, I watched it voluntarily.

Yes, I recognize this is probably insane.

But anyway!

Without further ado, let's check back in with the land of ... dinosaurs. You guessed it. It's back, way back we go, and we'll hopefully not lose all hope along the way.

That's what sometimes happens if you're watching The Land Before Time.

Tome Thursday: The Spellbinding Courtship

Hello everyone!

And welcome to the beginning of what will hopefully be a full series review, if I can make it happen.

I do know there's three books after this opening novella out right now, and a fourth one on the way, so I'm thinking this can very much become reality!

As you know, if I have nothing better to read, it's to BookSirens I go. The online service that connects authors with reviewers is really, really good for people who may not have the funds to be able to support their reading at the moment, because you get books for absolutely free - all you have to do  is read them within the time frame the author asks for, and leave a review.

Easy, right?

Right!

So that's how I bumped into this particular series. And honestly, I wouldn't have even read this prequel if not for the fact I'm organized enough that I don't want to just start a series in the middle. Since I really want to get to the third book, I had to start at the beginning, first.

Which is how we ended up with the review of The Spellbinding Courtship.

Tuesday, 11 July 2023

Talkie Tuesday: Thumbelina

"Always follow your heart."

Hello everyone!

Back again and we continue on the old animated cartoons vibe, because why not, am I right?

Honestly, I'm convinced half the reason why Disney keeps making live action versions of their animated material is because they can't come up with anything new or exciting.

The nineties were the way to go for animation, if you ask me (not counting the OGs that started while Walt Disney was actually alive and thriving, at that).

So tonight we go with another fairy tale retelling, though this one I think has a lot in common with Pinocchio if you think about it, which I'll be doing towards the end of the review, as it struck me while I was watching the cartoon.

First, however, we kinda have to actually figure out what the cartoon is all about, am I right?

So get the popcorn ready, get your Kleenex for the feels, and double check there aren't any moles running around without a care in the world.

Thumbelina's up next.

Tome Thursday: The Stars are Dying

Hello everyone!

Are you ready for this?

Because I'm not sure you are. I know I certainly wasn't, and I willingly signed up for whatever was coming at me at the time.

See a while ago, I kept seeing these gorgeous book covers (and similar book art) all from the same author. Bookstagram was going HARD, y'all, and eventually I caved and had a look around the author's page to see what it was all about.

Turns out, she's writing a fantasy series that's literally like someone wrote it especially for me.

So I grabbed the books and read the first one, but unfortunately then ran out of time as I had other ARCs waiting for me to read and review them.

Then this one came about - I'd seen the promos on her Instagram, but randomly stumbled over an open call for eARC readers, and signed up on a whim. I honestly didn't think I'd get it, and would have been fine just waiting for the book to release, but guess what? I GOT THE ARC.

And with the book releasing in a few days, here's your glowing review for it. What's it called? The Stars are Dying.

Talkie Tuesday: The Witcher

"Changing destiny is a weighty business."

Hello everyone!

You knew this was coming.

If you've been paying attention to my blog, you'll know that, apart from the books - and I swear, at some point I'll either continue and/or finish the series or give up on it completely so it isn't in limbo anymore - I've reviewed everything that Netflix has thrown at us so far.

Which of course meant that the third season would ALSO be making its way on here.

And as I have no particular desire nor plan to watch from the ending of that onward (despite the fact the political stuff is turning fascinating enough), I suppose we're nearing the beginning of the end with this swan song.

So let's buckle up then.

The first volume dropped last week, and we have a month before we see the aftermath of all the scheming and manipulations.

The Witcher is back in business, baby.
