Talkie Tuesday: Agneepath

"To gain something, you have to give up something to the path of fire."

Hello everyone!

Welcome to yet another Hrithik Roshan movie, back from what I consider to be his golden days of cinema when he was practically booking roles left, right and center, and mostly all of them shot him further into stardom.

Not that I blame anyone.

I mean just LOOK at the man!

Ahem.

Tonight's movie of choice is one I'd had on my list to watch for a very long time, but somehow never really sat down to it until I had a few days off at the start of autumn here and could muster both time AND energy to sit this through.

These ole Bollywood movies ... three hours! My body just can't anymore lol.

Without further ado, we're going to walk right down the path of fire with the goat, Roshan, in Agneepath.

Talkie Tuesday: The Litte Mermaid

"Don't be held back by what you think SHOULD be. Think only of what IS."

Hello everyone!

And welcome to the land under the sea!

Well, the kingdom, empire, whatever you'd like to call it, I suppose.

In any event, welcome to me FINALLY catching up on the current trends and sitting down so that I could watch the latest Disney live action re-imagining of a beloved fairytale

It feels like this is going to be the newest trend for the company giant, although they do periodically release original, animated (and live action) pieces. Yes, I'm looking at you, Wish.

Which, I still need to watch as well, right after the Marvel movies.

But I'm getting off-track here.

Live action movies have a tendency to either go really well, or really wrong, and I feel like tonight's choice is actually really well done, in compare and contrast with some of the others.

So flip your fins and let's go follow the siren song of The Little Mermaid.

Talkie Tuesday: Death on the Nile (2)

"It takes two.

Hello everyone!

You thought I was done with this, didn't you?

Think again!

Inevitably, it seems, whenever I end up watching one of Kenneth Branagh's remakes, I also end up digging out the good old David Suchet interpretations.

Now, I have nothing personally against Branagh - in fact, there are several movies of his which I thoroughly enjoy, Thor among them - but unfortunately he's trying to flex and take creative liberties in a canon setting where these liberties might in the end confuse people more than make the cases clear and presentable.

And after all, that's what Agatha Christie was all about, in the end.

Murder mysteries, or mysteries as a whole, and the rather psychological way our detective solves them.

So one last time then: we're on a trip to Egypt. Death on the Nile it is!

Talkie Tuesday: Death on the Nile

"It takes two."

Hello everyone!

We return to the world of old Hollywood glamour, murder mysteries, and great mustaches.

No, seriously, we do.

You may have noticed that this blog features works by Agatha Christie rather often, and that's on purpose given that I thoroughly enjoy anything and everything that woman has ever written.

So when there are adaptations, you can bet I'll be somewhere close, or at least not far behind!

I'm a sucker for a good murder mystery, okay?

That said, I wasn't that much of a sucker for Kenneth Branagh's remake of Murder on the Orient Express, but I wanted to give this sequel to it a go because ... well, I'm a glutton for punishment.

And it wasn't even TOO bad, overall, if not for the blasted ending.

Hold on to your hats, we're taking a cruise through Egypt in Death on the Nile!

Talkie Tuesday: Mulan 2020

"Loyal, brave and true."

Hello everyone!

So every little chick and their mother are chirping about this movie.

And when I say everyone, mind you, I mean EVERYONE.

Everywhere you turn you can see some sort of commentary on this, from good to bad (mostly bad though). There are a couple of positive reviews but, unfortunately, most of this is as negative as it comes, and I do believe only one other got such a bad reception from audiences.

The Disney company used to have a good heading and knew where they were going. I'm starting to believe that might not be the case anymore.

After the Star Wars debacle (still hotly debated all around the internet), the live-action remakes of beloved cartoons was always going to be a dicey proposition.

But I liked two of those. I haven't seen the rest yet, but I'm planning on it.

This one I was unsure about going in, and it turns out I was right. Mulan is one of those things you'd think they couldn't get wrong - but they did.

Talkie Tuesday: Aladdin

"A whole new world ..."

Hello everyone!

I am BACK after taking a bit of a break and heading off to a vacation which consisted of no computer but a whole lot of books and rewatching movies I hadn't seen in years.

Harry Potter, I'm looking at you.

But then once I got back home I felt like there were other movies I should probably take a look at after I caught up with all my shows, and one of the first that caught my attention was a live-action retelling.

There's something to be said about those.

Disney has been punching them out like they're being made on one of those conveyor belts that goes round a manufacturing plant and people add things one after another in rapid succession. I do have to admit they're entertaining to watch, however.

So grab your flying carpet and hold on to your monkey, everyone, because it's time for a whole new world.

Or in other words, Aladdin.

Talkie Tuesday: Robin Hood

"Who's really the thief?"

Hello everyone!

FINALLY.

I know what you're thinking - this took forever. I KNOW.

I'm sorry!

I don't know what happened that I watched the movie and then didn't immediately review it. I think I was saving it for the week after but then got absolutely distracted by other blockbusters (read: Grindelwald) and somehow this ended up lower on the totem pole.

That's kind of sad, but then again, when you're watching a movie like this, I suppose you don't always need to be happy about it.

What movie am I blabbering about, may you ask?

You may. I will be more than delighted to tell you.

It's called Robin Hood. But if you're expecting Kevin Costner charm, think again.

Talkie Tuesday: Murder on the Orient Express

"I do not approve of murder."

Hello everyone!

First off, greetings from a VERY cold place. I swear, all that cold that seemed to have given the Koreans so much trouble during the Winter Olympics relocated up to Europe now. I can't remember the last time it's been this cold!

Luckily, however, temperatures SHOULD rise by next week, though I doubt they'll go as high as mine did while I was watching the movie featured in tonight's blog post.

Many of you will know (or you're about to learn) that I am a devoted Agatha Christie fan. I have her entire book collection in the electronic version AND all of her Hercule Poirot-centered books in physical copies as well. Which does remind me that my padre needs to give me the books of hers he's hoarding so we can make one shelf of it.

Anyway.

As a fan, then, there's no way you can miss out on her most famous case involving Belgian detecive Monsieur Poirot. But while Murder on the Orient Express has the flare, it doesn't quite have the bang it might have wanted.

Talkie Tuesday: Power Rangers

"It's morphin time."

Hello everyone!

I sincerely hope you're all enjoying the summer weather, wherever you are. I know, I know, it's hot, but then again this is what summer is supposed to be all about, right?

Besides, sooner than we know it, we'll be right back to dismal, rainy muck.

And then of course everyone's going to complain about no more summer!

But anyway, I digress.

My movie choice for tonight was one of those gambles I took, and a good friend of mine could confirm it since I spoke to her about it all right before I sat down to watch said movie. I mean, I HAVE learned by now that trusting IMDB ratings as opposed to my own opinion isn't necessarily the best thing I could possibly do (because usually, if a movie has a low rating it doesn't mean I won't like it), but with all the OTHER reviews floating about, I was hesitant. Then I was relieved I watched.

I'm talking, naturally, about the new Power Rangers movie.

Talkie Tuesday: Grease Live

"Grease is the word!"

Hello everyone!

You're the one that I want! Those Magic Changes! Hopelessly Devoted to You! Summer Nights! And a bunch of other songs that if I name them I'll be singing along to in my sleep, and I'm pretty sure my family kind of wants to have a quiet night tonight haha!

You guessed it, it's Grease time!

Ever since FOX announced it was going to be making a live rendition of the musical, I've been super excited. Grease is probably one of my favourite, all-time movies, even though I don't watch it as often as I probably could. And once news started trickling out as to who was cast in the respective roles, my anticipation shot off through the roof!

Because, I mean, this is one of the most iconic things on TV you're ever going to see, and you know they have to get it at least semi-right, considering people will be super judgy about it.

To my delight, despite the sound problems, it seems to be a success!
