Tome Thursday: Gift of Water

Hello everyone!

And once again, welcome back to the land of Teutonica.

Yes, yes, I’m getting boring I know, but don’t worry – this is the last book of the series I’ll be reviewing for a while, because the next one doesn’t release for a little bit.

Of course once it DOES, there’ll be a review on here, you can bet as much.

But I think that we can leave the witches and their priests to their own devices after this, don’t you?

In any event, it’s time to finally review the one book that’s eluded me because of my laptop troubles, which I read back on summer vacation and didn’t get to up until now.

Not a novella, but none of these are long enough to really cause headaches, so here we go, shall we?

Gift of Water, ladies and gentlemen.

Links to previous related posts can be found at the bottom of the page, as per usual.

Gift of Water follows a guest hiker to the village where everyone and everything seems to be living and happening, and one of the local waitresses who really, truly wants to be more, but her family keeps putting her down and telling her she needs to marry and pop out babies to bring any value to the community.

Gee, thanks fam, thanks a lot!

Jasmin isn’t having any of it, so after a random run-in with the handsome hiker who’s also a Teuton male and who’s friendly enough, she asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend so she can get her family off her back.

This kind of backfires spectacularly as they spend more and more time together under the ruse and guise of dating and their attraction blooms into something quite beautiful, but obviously we all knew where this is headed!

Then they go hiking, to Jasmin’s favourite spot on the mountain side, and turns out the guy has some ulterior motive to being here, too.

See, he REALLY wants to hike the forbidden mountain. Why? He won’t say, other than apparently wanting to conquer it.

Now, we as readers know the mountain belongs to the Dark Priest and his wife, Tea, and the priest suffers no fools to pass, casually flicking people off the mountainside if need be, so obviously our heroine is in distress about it.

She and her beau even fight over the issue and kind of go separate ways, but she DOES regret it enough that she warns him in her elemental spirit form about a barrier he’s about to try and climb into.

Is he slightly injured during this endeavour? Well, yes, but that just means a helpful nurse and some more cuddles along the way while they celebrate his birthday ;)

But it doesn’t stop him either, and he’s got a real twist in his pants about getting up there to that mountain, something Jasmin can’t understand, especially after being TOLD that the priest is probably going to kill him (which Tea warns Jasmin about, natch).

He slips off to climb though, in secret, and Tea’s the one who comes to warn Jasmin, and snatches her away so they can stop the men from doing something stupid, which is lucky because turns out, he DOES have an ulterior motive … and a noble one.

See, he found a journal back home, a journal belonging to his uncle, who just so happens to be related to … the Dark Priest himself.

The priest, who thought himself alone in the world barring his wife, has family, and that’s what the point of the guy’s persistence has been all along, making hearts melt and also making us feel thankful he didn’t get himself melted, too.

That said, they finally do make it right off the mountain and head to the secret spot that Jasmin discovered a ways back, where they can make love and just enjoy being together since they’ve now made plans for the future – obviously, they aren’t going to be one without the other, so that’s a happily ever after right there, and we might get to learn more about our Dark One too, while we’re at it!

Ahhhh back with the Teutons!

Still just as engaging and refreshing as when you pick up the first book, Gift of Water continues the trend and remains easy to read, wonderfully concise, and happily romantic.

I really like this series and how it's grown from just introducing the society and magic to now dealing with dead priests who serve a demon and figuring out an asylum.

Jasmin and Gregory were lovely and make for a wonderful couple.

The author has absolutely found a niche that I think works spectacularly well, and I can’t wait to continue reading this series.

We’re slowly starting to dig into the mysteries in this Teuton community, from the priest to the sanatorium that we’ll have to revisit at some point soon, I’m sure, and I, for one, can’t wait for that to happen.

The romance is neat and all, but I’m itching to discover what lies beneath all this carefully crafted, strict community that they’re guarding so fiercely!

And I can't wait for the next installment.

10/10 recommend.
