Men in Kilts: Scottish Sport

"Skinny-dipping."

Hello everyone!

Sadly this week the blog post will be a little bit shorter as I've been dealing with the plague on human kind - and not COVID either, but taxes.

Adulting is one of those things you wish you didn't have to do once you actually become an adult, heh.

Other than that, however, we are once again blessed with some good old fashioned shot of testosterone, which would never be more imminently evident than in sports, because where else do men EVER want to clobber one another over the heads and be better than their opponent?

Sam and Graham didn't escape this vice either, and I think they enjoyed it much more than most.

Then again, they'd done it before on Outlander already, if you recall that episode in season one during which they go toe-to-toe in a hair-raising game of what looks to be a rather 18th century version of a mix between lacrosse and field hockey.

But I digress!

We return to our Men in Kilts.

Talkie Tuesday: Avengers Endgame

"Avengers ... assemble."

Hello everyone!

Well, against all odds, I finally made it.

Not that it didn't take me freaking FOREVER.

The thing that happened this time was that I watched three or so Marvel movies in a row and then decided I needed to take a break - then the break turned out to be longer than expected because I just couldn't seem to find the time.

Three hours is a bit much and you need to actually plan to ensure you can get that in one go!

But I did it, and it's all under the belt now. FINALLY.

Of course it's late in comparison to when most people've seen this movie, but at this point it's not something I even worry about anymore.

I'm always late to something or other haha.

Avengers: Endgame was just the current in a long list of my lateness!

Talkie Tuesda: Avengers Infinity War

"We're in the endgame now ..."

Hello everyone!

Back with a movie blog and believe it or not I'm typing this one up at 6 am.

Why?

Because summer, that's why.

Summer has FINALLY hit the country but that means that temperatures are all over the place, aka super high and then some, which also means I either have to turn the AC on if I don't want to melt, or I simply don't go on the computer except early in the morning and then after the sun dips again late afternoon.

Unless something happens that ABSOLUTELY needs my presence online, I think I'll stick with not going online at all.

That being said, it IS time for a movie review, and why not continue along in the Marvel vein?

Heard about a Gauntlet running around? Let's look at Infinity War and see how the Avengers do.

Tome Thursday: Hotel Valhalla Guide to the Norse Worlds

Hello everyone!

It's time to defy Ragnarok again!

Okay well, maybe not quite, but MAYBE this gives you an idea about what I'll be talking about tonight.

I've sort of been behind on my reading for a little bit and I need to catch up during the weekend, so I pulled out an old favourite to check through since I've already done some other guide books by the same author.

Rick Riordan has this thing where he writes about deities from any and all cultures, more or less.

Most famously, of course, he breathed life to the one and only Percy Jackson, but another fan favourite was Magnus Chase, or he quickly became one, especially because Magnus is cousin to our Annabeth!

And well ... he's kind of dead.

More on that later.

For now, let's just say that the Hotel Valhalla guide is probably a must-read!

Tome Thursday: 9 From the Nine Worlds

Hello everyone!

I'm back with another Rick Riordan book review, because, well, I really enjoy reading his books.

Some people argue that he's beginning to repeat himself and that Percy Jackson was the best book series he pushed out, but I disagree.

I think the humour remains just the same, you just have to be willing to absorb and accept it!

And of course, you really need to be prepared for just about anything. So far as that goes, we've seen freak griffins, talking rivers, ships built out of fingernails, and of course there are the gods that keep popping up all over the place.

You'd think they'd have something better to do than bothering us mortals, but nope.

Especially if it means getting us into all sorts of trouble and mischief. Including waging war against other gods or, you know, accusing us of stealing some of their priceless artifacts.

9 From the Nine Worlds delivers just what you want, if you're open to receiving it.

Talkie Tuesday: Thor Ragnarok

"You cannot stop Ragnarok. Why fight it?
Because that's what heroes do!
"

Hello everyone!

So, fun story: I've actually been sitting on this movie for some time now, because, well, why would you watch it the second you can, you know?

I think I honestly just couldn't decide if I was willing to sacrifice 2+ hours when people kept saying the third Thor movie in the Marvel franchise wasn't even close to the first two. But, because AXN has been streaming Avengers (Phase one AND two, would you believe it?), I kind of got the wanderlust to finally sit down and figure out what happens next.

Turns out though I was wrong in waiting as long as I had.

Thor: Ragnarok is, as the title says it is, basically about the end of the world - or, at least, Thor's world, which in this case doesn't necessarily mean Earth. It kind of just means Asgard, but as Asgard was one of the Nine Known Realms of the cosmos connected with Yggdrasil ... you get the idea.

Still, it was one hell of a ride! Grab on to Thor's cape, it's off to Ragnarok we go!

Tome Thursday: Norse Mythology

Hello everyone!

So I made a snap decision to change the book for tonight's blog post. Why? Well, for no other reason than I felt like it.

Plus it took me FOREVER to get my notes in order for the original one, so I figured I might as well leave them to sit there for a bit, then go back and check them again before I decide to post it all up here.

In the meantime, however, I still need to write about something.

Which is why I decided to write about Neil Gaiman and his Norse Mythology book.

Norse mythology is, for all intents and purposes, as rich and varied as Greek or Roman, but unfortunately we just don't have enough written evidence about what happened back then, what people believed. We have fragments - but the whole is lost to us.

It's a sad story, but what we DO have, well, that's pretty brilliant.

Enter, stage right, Neil Gaiman with his all-in-one account of the gods, Norse Mythology.

Tome Thursday: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard

Hello everyone!

After a long while I'm back with another Rick Riordan appreciation, er, blog post. The last one I posted was roughly in summer last year when I reviewed the first of his Trials of Apollo series (which reminds me that I should probably review his second one in that trilogy soon), but then I kind of fell off the Riordan map, even though I continued reading his books.

Namely, I was taken in by this Norse mythology series the author launched.

It's title is, as you can see on top of this blog post: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard.

Sounds familiar?

You're right. There's another Chase running around Riordan's books, and her name is Annabeth, aka Wise Girl, aka Percy Jackson's girlfriend.

Magnus and Annabeth are cousins, and that DOES come into play in the books. Mostly though it just adds to the hilarity of all the situations these kids find themselves in, including but not limited to saving the world, often twice. Who's counting?

So below, you'll find a record-sharp recap of the entire trilogy. And all this while I'm reading Dan Brown's new novel, Origin!

Talkie Tuesday: Doctor Strange

"It's not about you."

Hello everyone!

Finally, everything seems to be settled enough so that I can write up a blog post on the day it's supposed to be written. I feel so accomplished, haha!

Luckily, I seem to have found a knack for managing my time a little bit better. It's amazing how much the house of cards can come down all around you when you stop paying attention for even the slightest moment, and then once that happens EVERYTHING follows right along that track, no questions asked.

Lists are my new favourite thing and my best friends. I kid you not.

Which is truly sad, considering the fact that I used to make them but then fell out of the habit ... and now I'm back in the saddle, so to speak! But I'm rambling like a teenager out on her first date so I might as well get to the point.

This past weekend, I finally, FINALLY sat down to watch Doctor Strange, and I say 'finally' with a note of annoyance at myself. I don't usually dawdle so much with Cumberbatch's movies.

Talkie Tuesday: Avengers - Age of Ultron

"Sokovia is going for a ride ..."

Hello everyone!

So, first off, let me just say that I had originally planned on writing about a different movie in this week's movie blog post, because I'm sort of sticking to a schedule, or list shall we say, which I made while I was watching them and such, but my plans went completely out of the window this weekend as I sat down to watch one of the most anticipated movies of 2015, I believe.

Well, at least where Marvel is concerned.

I am absolutely talking about the new Avengers movie which brings us to the (almost) conclusion of Phase Two in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (actually, Ant-Man does that, but I'm still waiting to watch it, so).

I will also admit to being a bit of a dork when it comes to these things, seeing as I've been a Marvel fan for a while now, and can we just say YAY on the fact that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is coming back next week?!
