Talkie Tuesday: Hercules

"What is the measure of a true hero?"

Hello everyone!

This week I'm once again straying just a little, as I haven't poked at Disney in a bit and figured, why not?

Besides, my Youtube algorithm kept suggesting videos from this movie for me and I couldn't resist any longer, not when Hades looked like the funniest thing since that TikTok video of a hamster or gerbil dancing with a water bottle haha!

Disney has been on a roll with live action remakes of its cartoons, most of which reached a fever popularity pitch in the nineties, or at the very least some of the best were released then.

Somehow or other, I never considered this one for viewing pleasure, however.

I'm not sure why.

I mean, it has Greek mythology (adjusted), Danny DeVito (perfect) and it surprised me with the sardonic, often dry sense of humour that you can see right off the bat from the trailer as well.

I'm talking, of course, about Hercules.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey (Booktober)

"In what forge but that of war can we otherwise hope to craft the dream?"

Autumn is a good time for wandering, for adventure ... and for a little history lesson. Assassin's Creed: Odyssey hit the markets as a highly-anticipated prequel to the game series, and eventually got an official novelization. While it may not be as diverse in plot as the game itself (there's NO way to smush it all in there!) it's still worth a read for the action, the heat of Ancient Greece, and because the eagle Ikaros is waiting.

You do NOT want to keep him waiting!

They call her misthios--mercenary--and she will take what she is owed.

Kassandra was raised by her parents to be fierce and uncaring, the ideal Spartan child, destined for greatness. But when a terrible tragedy leaves her stranded on the isle of Kephallonia, near Greece, she decides to find work as a mercenary, away from the constraints of Sparta.

Tome Thursday: Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Hello everyone!

In a slight departure from my usual reading material I'm diving into something else entirely tonight.

A little while ago, as I was watching a gameplay on Youtube, the channel suggested a different gameplay by the same person, and if you've looked at my blog post since you'll have seen that there are a couple of videos on here by him.

The Beaver does, after all, do AMAZING gameplays!

So when Assassin's Creed showed up on my feed, I was like ... it has Sparta? Wait, is it about Ancient Greece?

Sign me up!

So after getting into the whole gameplay thing I discovered that there is an actual, official novelization to the game proper. I grabbed the book ASAP.

Which means, assassins, it's time to pull down the hoods. Assassin's Creed: Odyssey awaits!

Tome Thursday: The Staff of Serapis

Hello everyone!

Time to continue on with what we started last week, although I only just realized that the finishing sequence of this trilogy will have to wait for JUST a little.

But before I get into that, let's head back into the world of mythos, shall we?

We're dealing with the Greeks and the Egyptians here, and if this sounds like something Blood & Treasure might have cooked up, or even straight out of history with the way Alexander the Great conquered Egypt and made it his personal province, well, you'd be right.

A lot of things you read in books have already happened throughout history, and NOTHING is weirder than actual history, let me tell you.

... There's actually nothing weirder than having huge gods run around with crocodile heads, but if people believed that and it kept them happy, I suppose we can't really argue against it, can we?

Last week, the boys got their adventure in the books.

This week it's girl time, since The Staff of Serapis is all about girl power.

Tome Thursday: The Son of Sobek

Hello everyone!

So every once in a while, as you know, I'll return to oldie but goldie books that I've either already read but never reviewed, or that I really, really enjoy and just HAVE to read again.

There are some authors that just have a grip on me like that.

And while I'm slowly packing and preparing for my vacation, I'm also gathering up books that I think I'll enjoy reading down on the beach, which is always an exciting prospect!

But for tonight's blog post, I decided on a short novella-ish type of book that was initially released as an audio recording and features some fan favourites from two different series that everyone has been DYING to see cross over.

Rick Riordan is kind of good at listening like that.

The Son of Sobek is the first in a short trilogy which features some characters that we know and love and mentions others, and of course there's always room for more where these guys are running around.

It's mythology, after all.

Talkie Tuesday: 300 Rise of an Empire

"Let it be shown: we chose to die on our feet rather than live on our knees!"

Hello everyone!

Happy New Year!

I hope you rang it in well and that you've made all your resolutions and such. Me, I've never really been one for those, but I have made myself a few promises that I intend to keep. That being said, however, it's Tuesday again, and do you know what that means?

Another movie review!

And since there's literally no holiday cheer left - I wrung it all out in December, regardless that I kept on watching some Christmas movies after Christmas - I picked a VERY different movie for tonight.

I'm not entirely sure you can go any more different from cute and fluffy than covered with gore and blood.

Having more time for movies now means I catch the occasional one on television, and 300: Rise of an Empire aired a week or so ago, making sure I hunkered down, got my nibbles, strapped myself with a safety helmet, and watched the Greeks and Persians duke it out.
