Tome Thursday: Troublemaker

 

Hello everyone!

 

I hope you're having an amazing week so far. I'm over here trying to figure out exactly why I suddenly had a nightmare about waking up late for school, when I haven't been to school in YEARS.

 

No, seriously, the years bit isn't a joke! LOL

 

But anyway, after picking and choosing books for Booktober, I figured that a simple Thursday post would work best really, and that was how I picked tonight's topic.

 

This was the last book I read prior to the beginning of October and my book extravaganza and I kind of wanted to do a blog post on the theme to begin with though never got so far at the time. Now though, nothing's stopping me as I'm well and truly back to the old ways!

 

Weird dreams aside, I'm pretty sure this book is one of the best things to come out of Hollywood in a long, long time, and again this is no joke.

 

Hollywood used to be this glitzy, glamorous place everyone wanted to be, but the more we learn about it in recent years, the less we ACTUALLY want that.

 

Reading Leah Remini's Troublemaker: How I survived Hollywood and Scientology book gives you one more reason to tip the scale.

This is maybe not the most autumnal book I've ever read BUT it's my most recent non-fiction read and I really did want to share it with you guys. I've never known much about Scientology as a whole until I heard about Tom Cruise and this religion of his. I have, however, liked Leah Remini for quite some time, so when I stumbled over her television documentary series, I had to pick up this book, too. If you want to know a bit more about Scientology - at least from someone who's as blunt and as upfront as Ms Remini - then I think this is definitely the book for you. Be aware, however, that it isn't going to be all honey and roses, and you should be just fine!

 

 

 

Indoctrinated into the church as a child while living with her mother and sister in New York, Remini eventually moved to Los Angeles, where her dreams of becoming an actress and advancing Scientology's causes grew increasingly intertwined. But when she began to raise questions about some of the church's actions, she found herself a target. In the end, she was declared by the church to be a threat to their organization and therefore a "Suppressive Person," and as a result, all of her fellow parishioners—including members of her own family—were told to disconnect from her. Forever.

Hello everyone!

I can honestly say I was halfway to writing up a hiatus post when I decided, you know what, screw it. I'm going to write about a movie I've already reviewed because this is something I'm at full liberty to do. 

Which basically means you'll be seeing a bunch of links down at the bottom since, you know, been there and done that kind of thing.

Still, since reviewing the movie for the first time, both my style and my commentary have changed somewhat, so I thought I might add some extra light to the entire factor without really taking away from what I had previously already done.

I'm talking, of course, about The Last Samurai.

And yes, I'm having a Tom Cruise kind of week.

Tome Thursday: Conqueror

Hello everyone!

I apologise in advance if this particular blog post has some intermissions during which I spontaneously burst out singing 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling'.

Last night they aired Top Gun on television here, and while I can honestly say I'm not as big of a fan of that movie as some people (-cough-dad-cough-) I DO enjoy several scenes from that movie. Among them would have to be the bar scene, where Tom Cruise can't really sing to save his life, but you know; although the top would have to be 'You're gonna do WHAT?!?' because, come on.

I don't think anyone else can squeal as much!

But anyway.

Back to books tonight and I'm finally writing down my review of another Conn Iggulden masterpiece (though not, as yet, Bloodline. It's coming people, I promise). I went and finished Conqueror from his series about Genghis Khan and his legacy, and ordered my notes so that I actually see how they make sense now.

So, without further ado, I give you Conqueror. Or, in other words, Kublai Khan.

Talkie Tuesday: Edge of Tomorrow

Hello everyone!

So tonight's blog post is probably not going to be one of those sterling, praise-waxing I usually post. Then again, I usually kind of like the movies I watch, but every once in a while I run into one that I could have done without.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Obviously, tastes differ and some things just aren't for everyone, especially not with as many people as the world has on the surface.

But this surprised me because before I watched the movie the initial reviews and response was positive, largely so, although I will admit I haven't gone back to check whether or not it changed at all after I returned from my summer vacation (yes, this is still one of those from way back when, and hey look, it's almost Christmas too!)

Maybe I should have known it for what it was, but a good friend of mine raved about it and so I kept my hopes up. But Edge of Tomorrow absolutely failed to deliver in my opinion.

Talkie Tuesday: The Last Samurai

Hello everyone!

I can't believe it's December already, though looking out through my window you'd think it was sometime around April by the weather. I swear we're turning into Forks here on this end, but luckily our TV stations had some good ideas this past weekend about movies and I got to catch up on an oldie goldie while that happened: The Last Samurai.

Okay, yes, this movie has been out for more than a decade already and I'm sure there are by far more sophisticated reviews out there about it, by now ten years old, but it's one of my favourites when it comes to historical movies (even if it's not entirely accurate), and if I'm honest, one of the few Tom Cruise movies I can watch. Somehow, I can't seem to get into his vibe, although I can probably name more than a couple that were really good.
