Saturday Snippet: Vacation!

Hello everyone!

Starting tomorrow I'm off to the seaside for three weeks and I won't have internet access there. But don't worry, I'll read lots of books and watch lots of movies so then I can shower you all with reviews!

I'll see you all when I get back in August!

Tome Thursday: The Longest Ride

Hello everyone!

So I've sort of had to pace myself with this book as I was reading it, because one thing is certain, I would have probably devoured it in one whole night if I gave myself the chance.

Now, normally, when it comes to Nicholas Sparks books, I'm sort of apprehensive; mostly, because for all the salt this man has as a writer, he usually ends up killing someone off and making my tear ducts work out double time. So even though I picked this book up at the bookstore (regardless of the fact that I already have an electronic version OR that there's a nice image of Scott Eastwood on the cover, ahem) I wasn't entirely sure I wouldn't need a whole box of Kleenex the way I would usually do when it boils down to it.

The Longest Ride, being the latest of the writer's books, intrigued me, I have to say, mostly because of the trailer I saw for the movie. I have yet to see the finished product but I have every faith that it might be just as magical as the book was. Because, at the end of the day, the amount of enjoyment I got out of this was probably the most I got in a long, long time.

Talkie Tuesday: The Desolation of Smaug EXTENDED EDITION

Hello everyone!

So I'm back with another Hobbit review, and I realized I never actually put up the one I wrote right after seeing the second movie way back when, with a group of girl friends. We sort of made it an evening out and I have to say, just for the record, with as much hype as there was surrounding this particular event, and the trailers looking absolutely awesome, I was thoroughly and completely disappointed with the finished result.

Not only did it have so many unbelievable scenes as to make it almost entirely a different story from the original book, but certain things made me wan to tear my hair out from the roots, and then burn it while dancing around singing Kumbaya.

I'm fairly sure that a lot of people enjoyed the movies, but I also know, for a fact, the book fans were as disappointed as I was, maybe even more. You know how people always say the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy was the biggest mistake George Lucas ever made? Well, the Hobbit movies are Peter Jackson's, if you ask me. Still, as I'm a bit of a Tolkien freak, I couldn't resist buying the extended edition for the additional material it has on the DVDs, and I just recently watched the movie through.

Tome Thursday: Dreaming the Eagle

Hello everyone!

I'm not even sure I believe this myself, BUT. Lo and behold, I managed to finish this one monster of a book that has pretty much sat there, neglected, for the better part of this summer for some unknown reason or other. No, well, okay, there was a good reason for it, but it sounds better if you write that other explanation haha!

I'm talking, of course, about Manda Scott's first novel in her Boudica saga, titled Dreaming the Eagle (I'll explain all about the whole dream thing in the review a little later on, so bear with me please).

Manda Scott is an author I stumbled upon rather randomly while shopping in the capital and perusing through random books in the shop. I think I ended up taking Conn Iggulden's home instead of these, though I'm definitely rethinking buying them in physical form instead of as an ebook because they ARE quite good, and there isn't all that much out there about the fabled battle queen of Britannia (England, for those of you who aren't as savvy in history terms).

But let's get to the actual review!

Talkie Tuesday: The Tudors (season 3)

Hello everyone!

So here we are again, right back where we seem to always wind up nowadays every once in a while, right? Right. As I promised my girl Maegan, I'm definitely watching through the whole of the Tudors television series, but that does mean I get Tudor-overwhelmed every once in a while, and so I make it a point to watch something else entirely in between two seasons. Which is why Game of Thrones came into play, persay, the previous week ago, and this week it's all about the Royals, which I will hopefully be able to write about next Tuesday!

On another note, I'm definitely packing things up on the computer for my vacation, which is apparently a go, and that means hoarding movies together that I haven't been able to watch yet because, you know, stress and job hunting as well as this binge watching of TV shows has kind of made it impossible. But never fear! I'll come back from the seaside with so many movie reviews to talk about, I'll probably have these Tuesdays covered until Christmas.

And also, remember everyone: go and watch Batman vs. Superman when it hits theatres because it has Henry Cavill in it, and our very own Charles Brandon definitely likes the support!

Saturday Snippet

Hello everyone!

So yesterday was national Miner's day here in my country, and there was the annual parade through the city (which I missed, unfortunately)!

It's a lovely tradition of accepting new miners into the ranks by having them walk through town in uniform to the stadium and then jump across a "skin" (which was once used by miners to sit on as they slid down into the mines) and thus become part of the larger group.

The red carnation is the flower miners wear on their uniform as they march.

And, as we say here,

srečno!

Tome Thursday: Trinity

Hello everyone!

So lo and behold! I've finally taken my own advice and I'm now going to be chewing through the books that I've sort of begun reading and/or haven't finished yet, because I want to have a semi-clean slate before I head to the seaside for my vacation. Or, that's the plan at least, who knows if it's going to go the way I want it to haha? Probably not, but one can always hope!

The very first on my VERY long reading list was Trinity, by author Conn Iggulden, because that poor thing has been sitting there for a while about halfway done, and I couldn't bring myself to read it for some reason or other. Maybe it had to do with the fact that, this book in particular, seems to show that Iggulden is pro-Lancastrian and I'm prety much pro-York when it comes to taking sides in the War of the Roses, or the Cousins' War as it was also called. Or maybe that's just my feeling and I didn't quite get the memo right, but I'm fairly sure his commentary in the author's note section of the book point towards the whole Lancaster thing more than York.
