Hello everyone!
I was a bit on a roll with Susan Elizabeth Phillips and ended up reading bits and pieces of some other books in between, but then I went back to one of my absolute favourites, Danielle Steel's 'Wedding'. I honestly don't read much of Steel to begin with, contrary to popular belief, I have a couple of books that I like, but that's it, because generally speaking I can't get into her characters as much as I probably should, or could. In any event, however, out of the three books of hers that I like, The Wedding was probably the first one I read that honestly sucked me in. My mother bought it as paperback, and to this day I'm still mad at her for trading it out for another Steel book with her sister. Grrr! Haha.
The story in itself is relatively simple: it follows the personal life of attorney for the stars Allegra Steinberg, daughter of a famous Hollywood couple who work in the producing business and have both won many awards for their respective jobs. Allegra is their oldest child, or, as it later turns out, she's Blair's oldest child, but Simon Steinberg raised her from the time she was about five or six, and she's never considered him as anything else but her father.
The story begins when Allegra is in a semi-happy relationship with another lawyer, Brandon, who is cheating on her but she doesn't realize it until finding evidence of his infidelity, whcih ends in a break-up. Prior to that, she meets another man on a business trip to New York, Jeff, who seems to be the perfect match. The two begin a relationship soon after and life seems to be perfect: they have the same wants and likes, aspirations and dreams, and they're both pretty similar in character as well. Things don't go all that smooth, however, as they try to juggle their hectic schedules, her chaotic family, his serious and slightly cold mother, preparations for a wedding, and just everything else that life in Hollywood brings. But through it all, one can definitely see that they're made for each other because as opposed to Allegra's previous relationships, she's actually trying to work this out, and so is Jeff.
While we're dealing with the main couple, w also get to know about her parents, how Blair and Simon have a bit of a falling-out and then mend their relationship after his one-time jump in bed with another woman; Allegra's youngest sister, Samantha's unexpected pregnancy and then marriage to her high school sweetheart, and the lives and threats to the clients Allegra works with, along with their general life and problems. There's everything from bailing someone out of jail, to giving up a baby for adoption, and a rockstar getting shot on-stage.
All in all, I like going back to that book because every problem gets resolved, in its own way, and while it might not be the most perfect writing masterpiece of the decade, Danielle Steel marks yet another successful manuscript with this one, and I genuinely enjoy the main character, who is temperamental, compassionate, and flawed (very human, then!), and how she deals with things.
Plus, who can really say no to a happy ending?
Have you read any good books lately?
Have a good one x
