Game of Thrones: The Red Woman

"For the night is dark, and full of terrors."

Hello everyone!

Normally, I don't do these kinds of posts, or better still I do posts which cover the whole season of a television series since if I wanted to do recaps of each episode, I'd have to have more sets of hands, more time, and much more blog space.

But.

In all honesty, the hype surounding Game of Thrones and its sixth season was such that I'd have to be blind not to notice it.

Not to mention, I was right along there with them!

This show is probably the most successul one HBO will ever make, and I'm not saying this lightly given there's a lot of potentially awesome material out there which could very well take the throne, but so far, Game of Thrones seems to be the only thing that's really burning all bridges and collapsing every single record out there.

And honestly, they own it.

Before we hit the premiere, allow me to link you back to the season five overall review I did last year, right here, so when you've refreshed your memory about what happened before, come back here and we can talk!

Now, assuming you've read that, and assuming you've seen the episode, I will say this: there be spoilers ahead. Fair warning. So if you read anything you didn't want to know ... well, I mentioned spoilers before, haven't I?

High-ho, Silver! Away!

Ahem.

We open the episode (after the fabulous opening sequence which now includes Dorne) right where we left off last season, which is with Jon Snow lying dead on the snow, Ghost howling about it. Ser Davos exits his chambers, as do other members of the Watch loyal to the deceased (or is he?) Lord Commander, and they bring him inside, free the Direwolf, then barricade themselves in after Melissandre arrives from Stannis' earlier defeat by Winterfell. Next on the list of things at the Wall, Thorne assumes the command and offers free passage to the soldiers holed up in the room, one whith Davos knows isn't going to hold. There's more holes in that one than there are in a leaking water bottle. So, what happens is that Davos mentions others who owe Jon their lives - namely, the Wildlings, and Ed is sent to get them. To top it all off, the Red Woman takes off her necklace and becomes an old crone ... which directly links to the belief of the Red God, actualy: she gets her power and her life from that deity, and she appears defeated.

She needs to get her groove - and clothes - back on.

Elsewhere in the North, Ramsay mourns the death of his favourite kennel woman, and the hunt for Sansa and Theon is on. They survived jumping off the walls, but are very nearly hauled back by Bolton's men before Brienne and Podrick arrive, saving the day, finally reuniting the knight lady with the lady she's meant to serve.

Moving on to warmer climates - literally.

In King's Landing, Cersei and Jaime mourn the death of their daughter - Myrcella was given the kiss of death, if you recall - and Jaime pretty much tells his twin they'll take everything, and who cares about everyone else.

That sounds suspiciously like going head-first to your doom, but don't mind me. Just thinking out loud here.

In Dorne, there's a coup going on. Like, for real! The Sand Snakes and their mother are so totally on board with taking over the throne and doing something about all the injustice they've suffered since Elia's death, years and years ago. And I think it's a pity that Doran's character was killed off as he is actually one of the most effective players in the game of thrones in the books, but then I think about a quote Tyrion made once: "How many Dornishmen does it take to start a war? Just one." And I re-make it into "How many DornishWOMEN does it take?" Because you know this is going to go from bad to worse, super fast.

Whle this is all going down in Westeros, across the sea, we have a different set of problems: Tyrion doesn't know the local language well and talks about eating babies, the ships just got burned so they can't go back to Westeros any time soon, and he's left ruling a city paralysed by fear, while Jorah and Daario are still hunting Daenerys ... who's been picked up by the Dothraki, and after some intelligent conversation about what colour her hair is (you don't want to repeat where), she reveals herself as Drogo's widow, which earns her a one-way ticked to Vaes Dothrak, and the Dosh Khaleen. And let's not forget Arya getting herself beaten by the Waif.

The plots are moving forward! Unlike in the fifth book, this ball is actually rolling, and I'm stoked to see where the writers go next, because we ALL want to know when and if Dany is ever going to make it across the sea. Where are the dragons when you need them, right?

I also don't believe Stannis is just dead. Not until I see a body or the burning corpse. Next stop if no one does it is probably him getting up with blue eyes and gunning for them as a White Walker.

Come to think of it, it might also happen to Jon if something doesn't change that, stat!

Nine episodes to go, with a confirmed seventh season, so everyone should hold on tight, because this is going to be AMAZING.
