Talkie Tuesday: Eurovision 2022

"The Sound of Beauty."

Hello everyone!

A slight departure from my usual blog posts but, I couldn't not at least have a very quick little entry with regards to this weekend's competition.

One would think that we've done this before at some point or other but, it doesn't look it.

Well, there's a first time for everything!

And in case you're wondering, yes, I actually almost always watch the grand final.

It's been a bit since I've watched the semi finals because generally speaking, that's just too many nights in a row for music that isn't as good as it could be (no offense but, it's the truth), so I settle in for the three-to-four hour extravaganza on a Saturday night instead!

Boy, was it one this year.

Was it worth the hype? I'm not entirely sure.

But Eurovision has come and gone, either way.

If I have any links related to this topic, you'll be able to find them down below, as always!

On with the show, however.

This year's Eurovision comes on the heels of the chaos from the past few, what with COVID and all of that, but at least now it looks like things are starting to go back to normal.

It was hosted by Italy in Turin, and actually, Italy didn't place too badly either, which is a surprise given that they were more often bottom of the barrel prior to taking a break (then again, Mahmood is VERY good, so).

The production was as productions go for this sort of affair, which is to say, lavish, beautiful, and almost over-the-top, but it was enjoyable, all the same.

Until you came to the music.

This year was the year of the ballads, apparently, because only a handful of songs could be counted on to feel a little more vibe-y and rhythmical, Spain and Romania included, there was a lot of country for some reason, and the winner is purely political.

Listen, we all know this contest has been about politics more than anything else since ... well, since always, but USUALLY you'd get that kind of political scheming more in the background, a secret that everybody knew about but wasn't too obvious, you know?

This year though. THIS YEAR.

Listen, the song Ukraine sent is okay. It's not good, but it's okay. However it's NOT a Eurovision winner tier song, I'm sorry. I don't much like what's happening at the moment (who does?!?) but this is absolutely ridiculous.

I was actually convinced for a bit that Norway would win, with their eccentric entry, and then thought Serbia might with their own eccentricity.

But no, of course not.

Now I'm wondering if they shoved the win at Ukraine so that hostilities HAVE to cease by the time the country hosts the song contest, because otherwise how is this going to make sense again?

Overall though, the depressive nature of this year's contest pretty much almost got to me. I fell asleep during it twice, and usually I'm better at keeping up with this stuff. But so many ballads in a row make for a sleepy audience, and honestly I miss the crazier years where the stages would be bouncing right along with the performers.

So maybe we'll get lucky in 2023 and it WON'T be the year of the ballad.

... also someone please hand that wolf a banana.

xx
