Talkie Tuesday: Pie to Die For

"Sometimes you just have to improvise."

Hello everyone!

Welcome to another Hannah Swensen movie.

Hallmark releases these every once in a while, and they're on movie ... eight right now? Ten? I've lost count.

But they're definitely moving into double digits!

The thing about these movies is that they feature a generally likeable cast, a plot that's usually fairly easy to follow along, and nothing too complicated so that you don't have to spend hours scratching your head about what's happened.

It's also why I like to sit down and watch them when they release - they're pretty good for resting my brain a bit!

Sure I'm wondering about the case, but it's not life or death.

Well, at least not for me - it's a bit different for the unfortunate victim, I suppose. Without further ado - Pie to Die For.

Hannah (Sweeney) regularly attends her mother's (Barbara Niven) plays, often taking Chad (Webster, and oh God, why did they name him CHAD, again) with her. It's through one of the plays that she meets the actual star of the show - who ends up dead the weekend that Hannah's bringing her banana cream pies.

Nobody's surprised anymore that Hannah keeps finding bodies which pop up around the Lake Eden community, but it becomes personal this time when her own mother is a person of interest, and later full-blown suspect for the murder at hand.

Say what???

But you see, Dolores basically had a thing with this other actress and they were always in a tiff, so naturally the sheriff has to take that into consideration, as well as the fact that Dolores has no real alibi.

I will admit, however, that the actual sleuthing aspect of the film seems to take second stage in this movie to the developing romance between Hannah and Chad, and Dolores herself.

There's really a lot of scenes between the two main leads, and you can see that Sweeney and Webster have starred in other movies together because they play off one another effortlessly. Chad takes Hannah to dinner, opens up a little about himself, his time in the Marines, and of course obligatorily saves her life at the end of the movie.

He also tags along for the tango session, and kicks the ass of the intruder in her home when they find it broken into, who was hired by the victim's nephew to scare Hannah off investigating the case.

It's quite cute, honestly, and they're both a little bit like teens when they flirt, giggly and adorable, which is quite lovely to watch.

In the end, the reason the other actress was killed was the fact she was simply TOO popular, and liked by the people who knew her well, and liked to kind of hog the spotlight for herself. The theater manager was the one to do it, jealous to no end about the other woman supposedly "stealing" the tango dance instructor from her, as tango was HER thing.

This all comes to light during a family reunion Hannah helps her bakery partner Lisa plan (and they get to deal with Lisa's flighty and irresponsible cousin while they're at it), when she's held at gunpoint, chucks a fake knife at the murderess, and drops a sand bag on top of her in improvisation.

All's well that ends well, however, because Dolores is cleared of all charges, and the sheriff actually has the guts to pretty much ask her on a dinner date!

This isn't something I saw coming, however, I can honestly say I'm down with this development.

Dolores needs something - or someone - else to focus on besides her three daughters!

Overall, this is an easygoing movie to follow along with, it's cute, it has laugh-out-loud moments, but it's also true it's not going to win any Academy Awards.

I'm not here for the accolades so much as I am for the fun, though.

So keep them coming!

xx
