Hello everyone!
Keira Andrews releases a new holiday-flavoured romance every single holiday season, and if you ever thought I wouldn't be reviewing them ... well, you've gotten up on the very wrong side of the bed haha.
I'm pretty sure that I've covered almost all of them thus far, though of course I may be wrong and have missed one or two, which if I have, I'll just have to remedy at some point, no problem.
News of this year's found its way to me at the best possible time when I needed the extra distraction, and as always, it did not disappoint at all.
As far as I'm concerned, if you want fluffy, happy, merry holiday reads, Ms Andrews should be your go-to!
Also included are some steamy moments and all the happily ever afters you could possibly want.
So without further ado, let's not waste any more time, shall we?
Because Only One Bed is up, and man, it's a good one!
As always, links to previous book reviews from this holiday section can be found at the bottom of the page, and I will also be including links to Ms Andrews' other holiday romances that I've read and reviewed, as well as the simple tag labelled with her name, considering I frequently pick up her books.
On with the show!
Only One Bed tells the story of figure skaters, which if you haven't been paying attention is a fairly underrated topic in the fiction community. I've always loved watching the competitions and the way these men and women glide across the ice, so this was an added treat for someone who has the grace of a walrus when on the slippery stuff.
And this with a father who used to play hockey. Life, right?!?
Anyway, the book begins with Sam, whose older brother Henry is a professional figure skater and hopes to place for the Olympics, but the more important part is that Sam's best friend, Etienne, is ALSO a figure skater, doubles style, who ALSO wants to place for the Olympics with his partner.
Unfortunately for him, a former double (and formidable pair) announce their return out of retirement to probably skate in the Olympics, which definitely puts a different spin on everything, with only two slots open for two couples.
As Etienne will be skating in a holiday program at a resort, he asks his best friend to come up for Christmas and New Year's, for moral support, which naturally Sam does.
Which is also where the fun begins!
See Etienne's loved Sam since forever, being gay, but Sam has always identified as straight which has kind of put a dampener on any potential or possible relationship ... until now, when all of a sudden Sam starts realizing he may love Etienne in a slightly different way than he originally thought.
To be fair, everyone around them (and their mother!) has been waiting for them to get together for years now, including Sam's grandmother and Etienne's skating partner Bree. And since Henry is out and proud, it wouldn't really be an issue for Sam's family, not really.
It's adorable how Sam calls HENRY for advice, which I thought was probably one of the cutest moments in the entire book, right before the two young men face their feelings head on and end up sleeping together (okay, to clarify: they've slept in the same bed all this time at the resort, as there was only the one, but now it's not sleeping, it's SLEEPING, wink wink).
This comes at just the right time as Etienne needs more support than ever, doubting his skating career after Bree suffers a concussion some months back and is still feeling the consequences, not to mention that both of them are struggling with not enjoying skating any more as much as they used to. They come to the same conclusion, mutually enough: they're going to return to Vancouver to their old coach, and then let the chips fall where they may, Olympic games or not.
Also of note is the piece of information that Henry's biggest rival Theo is also skating in this holiday program at the resort, and turns out to be a pretty nice guy who often helps Etienne and Bree out, just because he can - and allows for sparks to fly when Henry finally shows up at the end of the story.
Actually, Sam's entire family does, for New Year's, interrupting the two guys in bed, and being thoroughly smug and happy that they're finally together.
Which is basically where we leave them: Sam and Etienne are a happy couple, Etienne and Bree are headed back home to a trainer who'll actually pay attention to them, Henry and Theo are ... well, competitive as always, and the new year shines bright and clear.
Even brighter because the author has already confirmed Henry and Theo's story is releasing in January 2022!
So if you're into fun, fluffy, occasionally sexy, friends-to-lovers books with a happily ever after, look no further than this. Why not get into the holiday spirit with some figure skaters, a cute Christmas-y resort, and extra cuteness?
Plus you get a bit of information on what it's like to be Canadian-Asian (Sam's genealogy), as well as just a feel-good story that should light you up inside out.
I don't know what you're waiting for, to be honest - pick up this, or any other of Keira Andrews' stories today, and you won't be disappointed!
xx
