Tome Thursday: The Perfect Gift

Hello everyone!

It's time for yet another book blog, and as with the two previous ones, this is going to be a Christmas-oriented piece.

I'm feeling festive considering the fact that I've managed to finish my Christmas shopping earlier today so now all I have to do is wait for the day to arrive so that I can stick the parcels under the tree and watch my family's rections!

Whew.

I have to say, the shopping trip was far less painful than it used to be, but maybe that was because I had company, or maybe I'd finished half of it already so it was only a matter of hashing out some details? Possibly.

In any event, I digress, and terribly so.

The book I'm going to talk about is the one that first got me into reading more work from this particular author, and is titled The Perfect Gift, by Serenity Woods.

To be fair, I believe I would have stumbled upon Ms Woods sooner rather than later, given that she writes about romance in New Zealand, and New Zealand is one of my dream destinations (thank you, Lord of the Rings!). In any event, however, I accidentally found her when Kobo had one of her books up for grabs for free.

The book was, of course, The Perfect Gift.

And as it's actually the first in a trilogy, I'll be recapping and reviewing the other two in the next two weeks.

As the tagline goes: what could be better than getting a billionaire for Christmas?
Getting THREE billionaires for Christmas!

This first book introduces us to three brothers, Brock, Charlie and Matt (in order from eldest to youngest), who have pretty much been rich before they made a breakthrough in the medical field with their work combating respiratory diseases of all kinds, and are also known for setting up the foundation We Three Kings.

Brock is actually a doctor who specialises in these cases because his sister, Pippa, passed away when he was fourteen, leaving him devastated and wishing he could help prevent something of the sort from ever happening to a family again.

The book begins on the anniversary of his wife's death; Fleur had passed away from cancer two years earlier. It's where we meet with the three brothers, and also learn that Brock has been in constant contact with a mother about her young son for about a year now, and Erin's boy was just admitted to the hospital again.

This is where the actual story truly begins, as Brock contacts Erin to see what had happened, and then the next day appears in the hospital dressed as Dixon the Dog, a character from his brother Matt's series who kids love.

The two hit it off in person as well, although Erin is hesitant because Brock is so obviously, well, full of money really, whereas she sometimes barely makes ends meet.

Brock offers to pay for a night away at a hotel as her birthday present, and also states he isn't expecting anything, because, gentleman alert.

Not that his brothers agree - or well, Matt doesn't, Charlie kind of doesn't get it, as socially outcast as he can be (which is totally cute).

Either way, Erin gets a stern talking to from her mother about what she shouldn't do, and an even sterner one from her best friend about what she SHOULD do. Couple this with the best friend's fiancé making a point that sometimes, a guy can do something nice for a girl without expecting anything in return, especially not sex, and you have yourself a winner.

See, Erin's had a bad track record with guys, especially her son's father, who is so not on scene anyway, so she's hesitant, but eventually agrees to go with Brock.

And I mean ... well, they have fun, what can I say? They're both consenting adults, and BOY, can Ms Woods write this stuff but good!

Anyway, Erin and Brock both figure this isn't a one-time thing, or a one-night thing, really, so Brock convinces Erin to visit him with her son so they can spend the day together, and also makes it a point to her that he's not going to apologise for the money he's made. Underneath it all, he's just human, too.

The day turns into a success, but after Erin returns home to the other island (New Zealand is made of two), and Ryan lands in the hospital again because of his asthma problem, Brock squares with her that he wants her closer to him so he can look after the two of them.

By the time Brock's Christmas party rolls around, she's definitely decided pro-Brock, and tells him as much, while we are left with the cute image of Brock trying to figure out when to give her a small velvet box.

Man, I want a billionaire for Christmas now!

The story was cute, it was funny, it was sexy, it's quick to read, and it gives us an insight into New Zealand, the three brothers, and launches us into the second book of the series. What wouldn't be to like in this?! It also gave me a toehold into the world of Serenity Woods, which I am now devouring by ... well, not sure how you'd phrase it, but I think I have almost all of her books in electronic version? That good enough?

I highly recommend reading any of Ms Woods' books, but this one in particular, as it has just the right amount of festive magic!
