Tome Thursday: Perfect Pitch

Hello everyone!

So I reviewed Catching Hell a little while ago and it was the second in the series, so I decided, you know what, I need to have number one on here as well, just to make sure my inner OCD stays nice and happy.

Mindy Klasky isn't an author I'd read prior to picking up a trio of her short books, but I feel like I could get into her stories.

Every once in a while, I need a little fluff in my life.

And by that I mostly mean stories that have a happy ending, that don't complicate life too much, and that might even have sexy heroes inside!

This one was one of those, although to be fair it was kind of funny as well on top of everything else. But it did have baseball, it had some really funny one-liners, and I have to admit that I wanted to hug the guy. Honestly.

So Perfect Pitch - here we come!

You'll find the link to Catching Hell down below at the bottom of the page.

Basically this is a story about an arrogant pitcher (Wild Thing, anyone?) and a reigning beauty queen who clash and end up falling for one another, which is enough for a fit of giggles, except it does have a bit of a backstory.

Samantha wants to launch a music program for schools around the state, if not the country, feeling that musical education is really important for children, so she'll do anything for that. She's also the reigning Summer Queen and as such has to adhere to some strict morality clauses (I feel like Hallmark channel has a lot of those too ...), which include but aren't limited to no "compromising situations".

Aka no dating, because heaven forbid a woman shows an interest in a man, right?

On the other hand, DJ Thomas, resident Rockets pitcher, makes Sam his enemy when he name-drops the Summer Queen title in a negative sort of comment, without even knowing who she is or what she does, and that sort of launches him into her orbit.

Red headed beauty with a star athlete? Hello?

Oh yeah, they hit it off alright, right away, but the thing is, even after he apologises, and she goes to sing the National Anthem at one of his games, the sparks keep getting hotter later at dinner and he ends up taking her home ... and there's a photo of them almost-kissing out there the next day.

Sam is now on probation, because kissing is a no-no.

Hear me eyerolling!

DJ's going on the road anyway, so what follows is a series of regular nightly phone calls that get progressively racier as Sam loses her inhibitions and begins to trust him. They both know what's happening once he gets home!

In the meantime, however, Sam has also met DJ's son, named Daniel, but called Trey, whom his dad wants to be the next great thing for baseball, like his father was before him (it should be noted that DJ's dad is a complete jerk). Trey, however, just wants to do music, so he fabricates a document for Sam saying it was signed by his nanny so that he doesn't have to go to baseball practice, which of course enfuriates DJ once he gets home and figures it out.

Naturally, he blames Sam, not that Sam's to blame.

Actually he's the one to blame because he's putting so much pressure on the poor ten-year-old.

It all gets shot straight to hell (despite Sam waiting for DJ to get home from the road trip and them taking it to hot and steamy in a second) at the home game where DJ really isn't in a good spot, and his dad is watching, so naturally he's upset and tries to find solace with Sam ... but they get caught.

And his dad is still a total asshole. I couldn't believe the things spouting out of his mouth, like the only thing that mattered was winning!

Not to mention, Sam gets fired because ... kissing and touching in public. Forbidden.

Ugh.

Of course DJ sort of blows it then, too, and he and Sam part ways, but he wisens up and corners her during the award show for the next Summer Queen where he apologises, says he created a fund for her music project, that he's going to let his son attend (implicating he's finally willing to start fixing his mistakes) and then gets down on one knee to propose to her.

Hijacked show, everybody!

I would have wished for a little bit more backstory on the terrible, horrivle, awful dad (there are truly no words!) and what that resolution was, if there was any, but at the end of the day it was about DJ and Sam, and they did get their happily ever after. DJ might get a more even keeled life now that he has a lady in it!

Plus, little Daniel can focus on music!

And children need to be happy, first and foremost. Screw everything else and all the expectations adults put on them.

xx
